Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. It depends on the application and the officer reviewing the file.

They only email for test invites, document requests, fingerprints, and oaths. If you and many others get the same updates without anything mentioned on your tracker and with no email then it's just a system update.

Mail in your passport? I've never heard of such requests. They can ask to send scanned copies of all pages buy I've not seen any ask for the actual passport.

The officer must have changed your email address as its the last email you used to contact them. All normal, they can schedule or email from any office. They move around files based on the caseload of offices.
