I have heard those stories but I thought that those cases took so long because it was difficult to verify information on the application or the background check took too long due to travel to countries which are considered war zones (for example - Libya).

Yes and No. With a long travel history your background check does take longer but there are plenty of us here who not have such an extensive travel history as your husband and our background checks are in process as well. So the reason for the delay may not necessarily be the extensive travel...
