This is the thing, I was making the same decision and I was under the impression that my sponsored spouse can stay in Canada the whole time by renewing the visitor status, but it looks like there is no guarantee on that. I will be screwed if the renewal is not approved.

According to the time table on the online application, they're processing the application submitted on July 13. You may want to give them a call if you haven't received anything. I am in the same boat, I will call them later today.
