So do they count 1 yr from date of application received, or AoR date or from the date of application processing?

How does one find out which office is the file sitting at? By calling? Whenever I called, at any time of the day, they were always 'busy'. I am sure that 24/7/365 they are NOT busy.

I was seeing most people in GTA getting their test invites at the 9th or 10th month. Many however were already done with tests (September to December GTA). I was feeling so anxious.

You mean it took 1 month for the card to reach you AFTER it was mailed out via Canada Post ??!! The renewal process is taking 1 month, agreed, but what about the time AFTER it is mailed out to the time it reaches you?
