Yes you should renew your passport now since your only in step 1 of the process. So that you dont have any worries in the near future about your passport getting visa because its going to expire soon and will cause you delays. After getting your new passport you should email the canadian embassy...

Did you have your passport with visa? Yes, I think CEM sometimes contact the applicants by using cellular phone. In my wife's case, 4 years ago, immigration contacted her via cellphone that her visa is ready and to be pick-up on that same day.
