Hello, I have got LOA from Canadore college for 1yr. IT- Project Management PG certificate course for Jan 22 but submitted deferral request for May 22, awaiting decision, haven't applied visa. My background is BCOM in 2000, no masters, working since then. For the past 5 years working as IT Project Manager. Will I put in SOP, I am going to Canada to study this course, since I don't have formal education in IT or Project Management? Doing this course gives me formal knowledge on both and ability to take up more complex projects at work and also help in my career progression. I am doing this since doing a full time course will show my commitment to the PM profession than doing a crash course like PMP or PRINCE2 which many are doing and will make me stand out from others. And also tell about and provide the future for this occupation in India once I am back and I will also be more employable than I am now. Can the above notes form the base of my SOP to convince the VO? thanks in advance.

Project Management is a standard course that is offered in every country and even online, so why do you need to come to Canada. You could take it in India.

Given the gap in your studies, a PG diploma would be a better choice than a certificate. Master's would be even better. A certificate is a weak choice for your studies. You can certainly try applying with the certificate and try writing a convincing SOP. It's possible you may be approved. Ultimately not possible for any of us to say.

This is specialised for IT Project management, in which field I am working for the past 5 years. And doing this will give me formal qualification which is helpful for my career progression. As stated earlier, since I don't have this education background, I am looking to do it full time and also do internationally since most Indian companies serve clients of North America, so this would give me international exposure and also in a country like Canada which is known for good education standards. Also doing it full time has its own advantages than a short time or online course which many are doing now, and that will make me stand out and show my commitment to this profession and my own career progression.

But the PM program is a universal designation so a program in Canada should be more or less the same as in Europe or India, for example. That is what you need to show in your profile and SOP…why do you need to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a program that has international standards. A masters may be a better option.

Agreed. I am planning to put, I am not choosing Masters since, I have already gained knowledge through the experience over the years in Project Management, but a certificate course would give me a formal qualification and an international degree which I believe will help in making me more employable and enhance career growth prospects.

Your choice of course doesn’t lead to career progression which I think is the biggest issue. You are already working as an IT project manager so there is no need for you to go back to school.

You aren’t getting an “international degree” but a certificate and you have been working in the field for 5 years. If you have gained the years in PM already then why a certificate course and not a Masters.
