is notary same as certified copy?

hey all,

a bit confused here..so we recently had our application returned because my husbands swiss birth certificate had missing docs. We missed the fact that it needed to be translated with an affidavit AND have it be a certified copy

After contacting a translator (translatecanada.com) they said they can translate it with an affidavit and a notary.

So do we still need to get the document certified as a true copy if they are already providing a notary? Otherwise we will have to wait an additional few weeks for his true birth certificate to be sent in then we can take it to a notary for that. I guess another option is writing a letter of explanation..anyone have experience with this?

Your translator is suggesting the right thing - certified translation and a certified/notarised copy. (Certified translation is same as one with affidavit generally and certified=notarised=true copy.)

So basically end result: notarised true copy with a certified translation attached to it; 'affidavit' and/or statement that true copy and true translation may be separate or just written/stamped and signed, possibly a seal, possibly bound. Usually in most countries this is a common combination - meaning I have not looked at translatecanada but sounds normal to me.

Hey armoured thanks for the response.

I guess my general concern was the highlighted info we were missing says 'a certified copy of the original document' The original document being his birth certificate back at home and our photocopied one we have with us.
According to the notary they need to see the original along side the photocopy to notaries it.

So when the translator says they will send us the affidavit and notarize it, will it be the same as the notary notarizing the original document? Sorry for the confusing explanation. In the end if the translator does that its fine for me just don't want to get our application sent back again.

You will need the original unless it's in English or french.

Then I recommend you take the original to a professional along with the instructions and have them do it. It's not complicated and you're overthinking it. They should know what to do.

For sure, we'll probably end up doing that. Just wanted to see if there was a way where we didn't have to mail the original copy across the world

Nope, to make a true copy of a document, you need the original.
