We are following the process and steps as instructed by BLS for applying for OCI for our child who is a US citizen. there is a problem we are not sure how to handle. Please guide us on this

1. - "Statement of Live Birth Certificate (reflecting both parents’ names). If the Birth Certificate is issued in another country, it is to be endorsed by the concerned Diplomatic Mission and thereafter by the Consulate General in Toronto " - This is part of the checklist in the Toronto-OCI checklist.

I am not able to find appointment to get the US birth certificate attested at US embassy. and then they want to do the same at Indian embassy. Has anyone gone through this process? please guide us.

Thanks,
Vignesh

Hi Vignesh,

I just cleared the first step piece of the step.
The US embassy does not certify/notarize birth certificates. What you need is an Apostille from the state in which your child was born.

I am stuck at the second piece of the step - and thereafter by the Consulate General in Toronto. Is this really mandatory ? The Consulate General in Toronto is not taking in person attestation requests. So mail in again :(. Please let me know if you find out anything . Thanks !

Thanks for the input. There are different answers every time I call BLS. Three answers so far
1. US embassy and service canada
2.us embassy and Indian embassy
3. Only Indian embassy

when I reached Toronto us embassy, they asked me to reach authentication and apostile service in Virginia. there is no proper contact for their service. I don’t know why it’s a huge thing for them to accept birth certificate which contains same info as passport.

But this still seems we need to get authenticated in Virginia by mailin. Did you do that?
Yes I got the Apostille done from CT since my daughter was born there. Next step I would like to book an in person appointment but nothing available for August.

Not sure about the Virginia process. Check their website. I Sent the original birth certificate and a $40 check with a return envelope and got it in 1.5 weeks

Thanks. The authenticate vs apostille certificate seems to be different for countries and it’s a bit confusing since canada is part of both the lists.. I will check Illinois state to see if they do apostille or authentication

Hi,
Can someone please let me know how to get a prepaid return envelop from USA to Canada.
I am in Toronto and I am not able to find a postal service which can give me prepaid return envelop.
All return envelops are only with 3 days shipping in future.

I did the apostille on the copy from a private party. This needs to be on original document from the state where child was born?
