Hi,
I and my family got our PR in 2019. We made an entry in October 2019 and soon received our PR cards as well. Our PR cards expire Dec 2024.
We planned to move to Canada from the US in 2021, but with COVID and a slow economy are not 100% sure if this is the right time. Can someone please explain what our options are? The PR Card expiration date is Dec 2024, but what will be the deadline by which we have to move there?

I appreciate the help!

Deadline? You're already a landed PR. You can go anytime you want as long your status is valid (not tied to your card expiry date).

Just make sure that by Oct 2024 you spent at least 3 years in Canada to maintain the PR.

The deadline to move is more relevant to those approved for PR but haven't landed yet.

You need to spend 730 days in Canada in the 5 year period to maintain your PR status. Your clock starts the day you landed. So technically you can move to Canada in Oct'22 but then you won't be able to leave Canada for 2 years to fulfill 730 days condition.

Thanks for the quick reply. By the deadline, I meant, that the day we need to move there without jeoparding our PR. And wasn't the time suppose to be 2 years till Dec 2024 to maintain PR. 3 years is supposed to be for Citizenship right?

Thanks for the reply. That does make sense. Let's assume that we move there around May 2022 to keep some cushion. Will we still be eligible for Citizenship after 3 years? Or will that be 2 + 3 since we didn't spend the 3 year period inside the initial 5 years.

Yes, you're right. I mistyped 2 instead of 3.

With regards to citizenship, it's not a fixed 5 year period. It's 5 years from the time you sign your citizenship application.

If you move in May 2022, and don't spend any time outside Canada, then you will be eligible in May 2025.

You shouldn't have to worry about maintaining the PR if you move in 2022 and genuinely stay on. You'll only attract attention to your residency requirement when you apply to renew the PR card, PR travel document, or appear at a land border without a PR card.
