It doesn't necessarily have to be a lottery.

Many years ago IRCC had no cap on applications. Back then, wait times for application processing were 10+ years. People didn't want the long wait times so the caps were introduced.

IRCC has also tried a first in first out approach where they started accepting applications as of a certain day and those who submitted their applications first were accepted. This was a mess and cause courier races. People spent a huge amount of money on couriers and some people even flew to different cities to try to make sure their applications made the cut. This was a bad system.

So now we have the lottery.

Actually I don't really see why spending a huge amount of money on couriers is necessarily a bad thing.

It just goes to show that there are people who are very serious about sponsoring their parents and are willing to put the time effort and money to doing it.

What the lottery has done is allowed some people to be lackadaisical about the process and hindering other people from sponsoring their parents.

Supply vs demand. There are so many things where if supply is less than demand then people queue or pay more to get what they want.

The people who complain are the ones who cannot afford or can't be bothered to spare the time to queue. Life is a competition the way I see it. Last I checked Canada is not a communist country.

Congratulations to all of you who have received an invitation to sponsor your pgp.

This is my first post, and I am disapointed to see people throwing sh** to the system.

I do understand we all want to be with our family and the desire each one of us have to bring our parents / grand-parents to Canada.
I see people complaining about other canadians and the fact that they do pay taxes.

Each one of us made a decision to start a new life in Canada, and I am pretty sure we were all aware that bringing our parents to Canada was not something granted by the government.

We ALL pay taxes, and we do so that we can benefit of some free services we wouldn’t receive in our countries.
So please, stop complaining, it is a lottery system and eventhough there is much to be improved, do not believe that because you are an essential worker or you have been living in Canada for several years sponsorship for pgp will be granted.

People are trying to understand the trend but so far been random.
however Only person who can answer this question is who wrote the algorithm of IRCC software that picks the application from pool.

I have suggested IRCC adopt the open bidding system from Singapore's "Certificate of Entitlement" (COE) scheme.

The way it works is to have people bid how much they would pay for a spot. All bids are posted publicly on a website (no names). From top bid to the 10,000th (last qualifying bid).

At the end of the day all top 10,000 bids pay what the 10,000th bid is.

Basically if the 10,000th bid is $0 then everyone pays $0 even if they bid $20,000.

This way IRCC says it is not them who set the price. It is the people applying themselves. And it is what people are willing to pay. If demand is low probably $0 or a very low bid will get you a spot. If demand is high then it might be more expensive. The high rollers will bid high first few rounds and pay top dollar but they will no longer be around next round. And so on.

IMO there is zero chance this will ever happen. Something like this would be viewed as extremely un-Canadian and exclusionary. You need party support to make this kind of change. No major party is going to support something like this. Demand is always going to be high so this basically becomes a 1% game (or maybe 10%) and everyone else is permanently left out.

If you think there should be more focus income / earnings driven, then I think the best you could hope for is a further increase to LICO. That's what I would lobby for if you feel this is a priority.

I agree.

Lottery is the most Canadian and inclusionary. Even the FIFO was slammed.

+1 for the lottery being a fairer system than others. Look at the US for instance (they don't have lottery for parents), I know of sponsors waiting 15 years to sponsor their parents.

The issue with the US isn't so much the wait times, although it is true that you need to wait until you are a US citizen to qualify (green card holders cannot sponsor). However once you qualify, the process is relatively quick. Probably the main issues with sponsoring parents to the US is health care. Getting health care coverage is insanely expensive and completely unaffordable for many - and this ends up preventing them from bringing their parents to the US permanently.
