Passport expiring soon and bridging open work permit

Hey everyone!

I'm in a bit of a pickle and would really appreciate any kind of help

I’m currently on an open work permit (PGWP) which expires in March 6th because of my passport expiring on that date. I applied for PR in November (ITA in October) and I don't have to give biometrics (already on file), but it's hard to predict when will my PR be processed.

I've been trying to renew my passport and it has been extremely difficult with my country's consulate. I haven't been able to reach them and I haven't applied yet because I'm unsure about the application process (very poorly documented) and don't want to lose my passport in administrative chaos at a critical time like this. I wanted to go to the consulate in question even though it's 7 hours away but they won't even do walk-in.

My understanding is that on February 6th, I won't be allowed to apply for a bridging work permit, and would need to stop working on March 6th. Is that correct?

I heard that I would be allowed to stay in Canada without working for 90 days after my work permit expires. Is that correct? Would I jeopardize my PR application by doing that? If that's possible, would the new application to restore my work permit have implied status? or would I need to wait for the work permit normal processing time before I work?

If I were to go home and try to renew my passport there as fast as possible, what are the risks involved with that (other than COVID-19)? Could I be rejected entry to Canada if I have a new passport and my permit is expiring soon? What about if I don't get a new passport but it's still not expired, would I be allowed entry on a passport expiring soon?

EDIT: I wanted to add that I'm from Tunisia, and currently working in Ontario.

The date is March 6th, not Feb 6th. Your BOWP application must reach IRCC before your PGWP expires in order for you to qualify to apply. The 30 days is just a guideline and not a rule.

No, it's not really right to say that you are allowed to stay in Canada for 90 days without working. The 90 days refers to how long you have to apply for restoration of status in the event you fall out of status. You would want to apply to restore your status if you want to remain in Canada.

If you were to go home, then I guess one risk is whether you have the right kind of visa to re-enter Canada. You need either a valid TRV or eTA (if you are visa exempt) to re-enter Canada.

I would recommend that you state what country you are from. You might get more assistance in that case in how to renew your passport successfully.

Missed one bit... If you end up falling out of status and then apply to restore your status, then you'd be restoring your status to visitor (not worker, unless you have an approved LMIA and job offer). As a visitor, you unfortunately don't qualify for a BOWP. The BOWP application needs to be submitted while you still hold a valid work permit (in your case, the PGWP). Hope this helps.

Thank you for the response! It's greatly appreciated!

Is the application to restore my status possible and legal to be done from within Canada after my work permit expires, or do I have to leave the country on March 6th regardless?

If you were to go home, then I guess one risk is whether you have the right kind of visa to re-enter Canada. You need either a valid TRV or eTA (if you are visa exempt) to re-enter Canada.
I have a TRV expiring on March 6th as well. Is there any chance I can be denied entry before that date because my permit and/or passport is expiring soon but has not expired yet?

Absolutely! I didn't think it would be useful. I'm a Tunisian citizen.
