Extending IEC visa

Hey all,

My girlfriends IEC visa expires Dec 15 and she is wanting to extend it by removing medical restrictions. (she is a German registered nurse but we think she can work here as a health care aid and stay in Canada a little longer).
We are wondering if she can indeed extend it using this option and if they will likely approve the extension. It seems this is the only way she can actually extend her IEC because she is a nurse back home and no other extension options apply to her. It application and medical exams to do this costs a fair amount (around $500) and so we don't want to waste money if this option wont work to keep her in the country and making money.
We are assuming that if she can remove the medical restriction and extend the IEC then she can just extend her health insurance plan according the new expiry date of IEC.
Does anyone know anything or have any experience with this?

thanks

IECs typically cannot be extended unless she is holding a employer specific Young Professional visa. If she is holding a Working Holiday Visa, it cannot be extended.

Removing medical restrictions won't extend the IEC. The IEC will still have the same expiry date, it just won't have the health care work restriction.

but what about on the website it states "If your work permit expires before IRCC processes their application, you can continue to work in Canada until you receive a decision on your application to remove medical conditions."? Won't they be giving a new expiry in this case?

No, her application will be refused because she doesn't qualify for an extension and she will end up in Canada without status.

All that statement means is that you can continue working while you wait for the extension application to be approved or refused. If you don't qualify for the extension, then you're still going to be refused. Assuming she holds a working holiday visa, she does not qualify for an extension. Removing the health care restriction doesn't extend your work permit. You have to actually qualify for the extension (which she doesn't based on the information you've provided).

If she has a specific employer in Canada who is willing to hire her, she can look into applying for a new IEC through the Young Professional stream. This will be a new / separate application and she will have to re-enter the IEC pool and wait to be selected. Right now the whole IEC program is on hold due to COVID-19. But hopefully this will change next year.

Hi all, new to this forum. In a bit of a predicament regarding moving to Canada.

1) My partner has her 2yr IEC visa confirmed along with job offer proof. She must enter by 2nd Feb 2021

2) I submitted my biometrics in August for a 2yr IEC visa also, however seemingly all IEC/CIC work has halted due to Covid.

1a) Is she able to extend her POE, to allow me more time just incase?

2a) I work for a company that can provide me with an ICT visa between UK/Ireland & Canada... Should I go down this path now in the meantime?

2b) How long does this usually take?

2c) Is it the same process as the IEC, whereby you need to provide police-checks, biometrics etc

Many thanks!!

I'll help with a few questions.

- Your partner can sent and inquiry to ask however IRCC generally does not extend dates for IECs and hasn't announced any exceptions due to COVID-19 in this regard. I would make the assumption she needs to enter by Feb 2nd.
- It's very hard to say when processing of IECs will resume. I would go down the ICT path if your company is willing and you meet the requirements. Processing times are all over the place right now due to COVID-19. I would plan on it taking a few months for the application to be processed so best to submit as soon as you can. You should be able to re-use your biometrics. I'm not sure if police-checks are required if you are a UK national.

Thanks scylla

At this stage, she may just have to "flagpole" and turn right around and come home, if I have to wait... But may get trapped in the 14 day quarantine rules if she lands.. Hopefully that is lifted come Feb.

Yeah i'm going to start moving on the ICT route as a back-up place. All im waiting for is for my biometrics approved. I have a job offer sitting waiting :(

Yes, she can flagpole provided quarantine restrictions have been lifted. Obviously hard to say where we will be in Feb. IMO the quarantine will remain in place at least until the end of the year.
