Hello Everyone

I am 42, English 1st lang. with 2 IT degrees, and a Senior Manager in the Information Technology field, 20 years IT experience. I am really keen on immigrating to Canada, however my CRS score is approx 330, mostly due to age. I see that people are getting invites with scores of approx 450. I am really far off. The situation in South Africa is not great, and due to time and the costs involved with immigration processes of various countries in general, I can only really pursue immigration opportunities to countries where there is a realistic chance of success. Does any know any people being successful in recent times through the skilled immigrant process that are over 40 with Skill Type 0 What is generally the percentage success rate with applicants that fall in this age bracket? I am also aware of the additional points via the PNP, and I have looked through the information specifically for Ontario, Quebec etc, of concern again would be lack of interest due to my age. Should I still pursue Canada at 42 or look elsewhere? I would really appreciate advice on this please. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to this message.

Kind Regards
Anashen

There really aren't percentages available in terms of success rates for ages. In order to be selected for Express Entry, you need to have a score of 470+ right now. 450 won't do it.

With a score of 330, Express Entry is very far from a possibility and the chances of PNP are likely on the low side. Are you able to increase your score through improving your language results?

Thank you for the response, there isnt much opportunity to materially impact my CRS score through improving the language results as I currently score on average a 7.5 to 8 for most of the sections. I could do the tests again in an attempt to gain a higher score, but it will not change my CRS score significantly. I have also seen that there is a British Columbia Tech Pilot Program. It however requires that you have a job offer first. What are the chances of being employed by a Canadian company when you do not yet have a visa?

Job offers are generally very hard to secure - especially right now with COVID-19 lay-offs and shut downs. However you can certainly try and some people are definitely successful. Stay away from agents when looking for jobs. These are pretty much all scams. If someone asks you for money in exchange for a job or offers to cover the costs of your flight / accommodations / food - it's a scam and the job is fake. If you want to apply for jobs, I would apply through the web sites of large companies directly. That way you will know the job offer is genuine. Good luck.

Unfortunately, IT industry in Canada is nowhere near as good as in US and it is firing people now. I have a friend in Vancouver who lost a job in IT company back in April, was looking for a new one for months, could not find it and got a job in construction, as general labour.

It does not seem right that you have so low scores given your your British background, huge job experience and probably master degree in IT field. Do they deduct a huge chunk for the age?

Being British doesn't give someone additional points.

Yes, OP has a low score due to his age. Yes, they deduct significant points as people age.

Yes there a large deductions for age and IELTS scores are not that high either which has an impact. Canada favours young, educated with good English or French language skills.

Actually, I disagree Brits speak English which is a huge advantage over other immigrants like myself. They can score 9 in IELTS if they study a bit but I will never get to the level. Also, all the paperwork is already in English and more. They have many other perks which facilitate their immigration process.

That's not what I meant.

Anyway regardless, the issue is the OP's age. That's the reason why points are so low.

Language in standardized tests is so much different than conversational/everyday language. Being a native English speaker doesn't guarantee you are an expert in English...I've had to school a bunch of colleagues so many times on their English. Even native French speakers struggle with the TEF.

Just because someone speaks English , doesn’t mean they are proficient at at it
Same premise in driving. Not everyone who has a drivers license can drive well

Sure, not be able to speak in English, hearing and understand it is definitely the same as being an expert in English, right?
