CoPR is not necessary to apply for citizenship not necessary for the oath.. it’s a misunderstanding and I don’t know why people keep sending it in with their citizenship application to prove that you are a PR holder. PR card is proof and CIC never ask for it in the checklist.. also who is going to keep a piece of paper around for 3/4 years..

You need to keep your COPR forever, even after gaining your Canadian Citizenship. In case you lose it, you'll need to get a verification of landing document. Please keep the document safe.

COPR is not mentioned anywhere on citizenship application. Is it required for Oath?

What i have seen from forum posts is that few people did not have copr as they have lot it before the test itself and many people were asked just for pr card during oath(dont know if someone was asked for copr during oath).
So definitely this is not the document we need to carry over the whole lifetime.

They didn’t ask for the COPR during my oath but did stress that I should keep it safe as I will need it when accessing CPP and other benefits.

I have been asked for COPR today after my oath. Very strange because in the oath instructions it says "permanent resident card OR confirmation of permanent residence". I cut my PR card in front of the agent and then he asked me for COPR. I explained I don't have it. He says I need to have this document because it's very important and I will need it when I retire. But he did not say the consequence if I don't have it. Then he just asked me to email the signed oath form.
So what's the point for him to ask for COPR if it is not absolutely required?

Not for the Oath Ceremony itself.

But the officer said its the only official doc for you to claim your Retirement Benefits and CPP. It proves that you landed as an immigrant and on which date. You can always apply for a replacement of CoPR doc. Good luck!

NOT required for Oath , but you have to keep it forever as it's the only document that shows you legally entered in Canada
