So, if I immigrated to Canada and got my citizenship, but now I am living overseas. I don't have any Significant residential ties, only Secondary residential ties (which is my Canadian passport). Will my child have Canadian citizenship (I believe I have to apply for Citizenship certificate for my child once he/she is born?)?

Thanks for any help.

Your residential ties aren't relevant. Your child will be a Canadian citizen by birth.

Not if the child is born outside Canada. Then yes, you will have to apply for a Citizenship certificate through the Canadian parent (you) - Citizenship by descent.

It doesn't matter where the child is born. S/he will still be born a Canadian citizen.

Child will still be Canadian by birth. Answer remains the same.

but if your grandchild is going to be born overseas as well, he/she won't be able to get citizenship by descent from you child. (this to prevent chain-citizenship)

Technically no. Citizen at birth not by birth. It’s actually Citizenship by descent. There are differences and paperwork is different too.

There is a difference in being born Canadian in Canada and being born Canadian outside of Canada but both are still Canadian by virtue of their birth.

Yes, nobody is denying the citizenship but the qualification terms are different in process as well as paperwork.

Just correcting what you said, as Canadians by descent are still Canadians by birth. I'm not sure what you mean by "qualification terms".

From April 2007 there is a change in law for Canadian citizenship by decent to child born to Canadian parent abroad.

It was April 2009 and doesn't change what I said.

We are not discussing what they are! Either way the child will be a Canadian citizen. It is to prove the citizenship and acquiring the documents to prove the same. OP asked if he/she will require a Citizenship certificate for the unborn child or not. And yes, because the child will acquire citizenship through the overseas Canadian parent and not de facto of being born in Canada. I’m not saying you’re wrong lol. It’s just the process to prove citizenship and arranging travel documents will be different. And future implications to pass on the citizenship to the next generation (if applicable). Just giving the OP all available info!
