A few things (apologies for the length of the post):
  • Canada's Immigration Plan for 2020-22 was released after the epidemic started - so they have clearly taken into account some of the expected effects of COVID-19. That said, the pandemic may have evolved in ways that weren't predicted so the way they go about trying to reach their objective may also evolve - how, no one can predict the future as this is an unprecedented situation
  • Immigration during a Recession: This is the next challenge for all applicants - throughout history, whenever there has been an economic recession, there has been a drop in immigration targets/intake. This is primarily because there are Canadians without jobs and opportunities already in the country - bringing in more from abroad does not make any sense. This may also be one reason why they are holding off on FSW for now - If there are 10-people fighting over 2-loaves of bread, it doesn't make sense to bring in 10-more people from outside because the number of loaves remains the same!
  • Canada's Immigration during past Recessions: There are many studies/articles about how Canada reacted to recessions in the past - most recently in 2008. There are some immigrants who do better than others - e.g. skilled migrants, entrepreneurs and trades people - while others don't - e.g. those (re-)joining their family. Here's the biggest thing: Those that immigrate during a recession (even skilled migrants) can end up "derailing their careers" or "falling behind" other Canadian professionals with similar qualifications as lack of jobs might mean that they have to take up lower-positions or find alternate employment
Take it all in as a pessimist, optimist or a realist - but the reality is that things will deviate from normal because things aren't normal right now!

And for those who are in the CEC v/s FSW battle, here's something you should know:
  • Study Permits are a great way to bring money into the economy but if students were told to leave right after, then they might not be inclined to come. As a result, study permits are touted as the first step in one of the easiest paths towards Canadian PR - Study Permit -> PGWP -> PR (through CEC)
  • CEC applicants have lower requirement levels to become PRs - so applicants can be of much lower age and lesser experience at the time of filing their application - hence they may not have as many points as FSWs right now!
  • The current PNP draw saw scores drop to 692 (which is 92-points in the pool). For those who think this is unfair, let me explain that there might be people who are relatives of PRs, who came to Canada and took up jobs in lower-skilled industries - they might not have enough points because of their skills or jobs or age. So as far as their score of 92 is concerned, understand that receiving an ITA is not the same as getting PR - there is still a lot of work left to be done
  • And for those who think that PHDs or Masters with higher points are more important to the economy, well let me tell you that a police officer, doctor, farmer, oil field worker, plumber or even electrician might be playing a bigger role in keeping the country going. If there's one thing this COVID-19 pandemic has shown, it is this - there are important jobs that are vital to the running of the world, and if your workplace isn't open or you're out of a job, it's probably because the basic survival of the world doesn't require your position - Remember Maslow's heirarchy?
Finally, those who are losing points because of upcoming birthdays, it is a terrible situation to be in - but trying to mask your frustration by hiding behind "Canada's benefit" is quite interesting - Canada's going to be fine because where one PHD or Masters applicant loses 5-points for age, another will come in from behind and take their place. So thank you for your concern for Canada but Canada will be fine with or without your particular application.

It isn't wrong to express anger or grief for losing out on your last opportunity - but where one window shuts, another opens. If you keep staring at the shut window, you might not notice the open opportunity and miss that too!

Being an Optimist is Good, but being a Realist is Much Better!

Do I have your permission to copy and send this to the immigration minister? @facethereality
If you're trying to stop new migrants, then I think they are way ahead of you - FSW is on hold and until COVID-19 clears, doesn't seem like it will open up.

That said... wait for a couple of months before you send it. My PR application is 5-months into processing and I might get a result anytime over the next month or two - then you can fire at will! ;)

So technically climb up the ladder and pull it up right behind you, yes?

Haha no... But you would advocate that wouldn’t you?
I have WAY better things to worry about in life than that.

I just objectively shared how, historically, Canada has dealt with economic recessions - I didn't show them that path and if they choose to go down that road, I cannot do jack about it.

Yes, I applied for immigration but if my application gets rejected, my life won't end. I have spent the last 12-years setting up a business that I will expand into Canada if my PR goes through - and run it from there (because my money buys me better things there). If PR doesn't happen, I will continue living here in India or see if I can expand into Europe or some other part of the world.

I am not holding my breath while waiting for PR.

I am objective about where I am, what immigration means and what's happening right now. I replied to a comment on some random forum with a snide remark - if you choose to decipher my life's plans and evil schemes from that, go ahead man. Your time, not mine!

The economy will bounce back, I think the Canadian government are very confident of that which is why they are still holding draws.

Only reason FSW is not included is because of the lockdowns.

Just wait for lockdowns to be lifted in key places like India and the U.S, you'll see an FSW or all program draw.
