Hi, I have a concern I’m sponsoring my dependent child. I have send all the documentation, now is already in the embassy of Canada in Mexico we Venezuelan citizens , now they’ve send me a request of document a copy of a valid passport bio data page. Now when I send my application my son’s passport was ok, but now it’s expired, and I don’t know if is because of that. They asking for a another copy? But I don’t understand why that should be an issue because by the critical and worsening political and economic situation in Venezuela. The inability of Venezuelans to renew their expired passports ,
August 19, 2019 – Ottawa – Canada recognizes the decree published by the Venezuelan National Assembly on June 7, 2019, regarding the validity of expired Venezuelan passports.
Venezuelan passport holders wanting to travel to or stay in Canada can now continue to use their passport if it expired less than 5 years ago or will soon expire.
Venezuelans can use these passports to apply for a visitor visa, a study or work permit, or permanent residence or to extend their stay in Canada.
Now I don’t know what to do shoul I send same copy with an explanation letter . And if is like that what should I put in the letter? Pls I need help I only have 39 days to send this information . Otherwise It could result in the refusal of my application. Thank you !

I know this is confusing but I think the key is that Canada considers the expired passport to be valid (as per the press release you quoted). So don't think too much about it and provide what you have.

Do not worry about why they are asking for an additional copy - it's entirely possible that they automatically send the request for the current valid passport and forgot that the expired ones are still valid. Or they are just checking that you have not obtained a new one for your child.

Send the one you have as they requested and you can include a short letter of explanation and even a copy of the Canadian government announcement about Venezuelan passports if you wish.
