Hi,

I’m an international student at McGill. I need to do an extra year so I will have to extend my study permit. I’m coming from a country that required visa to Canada. I was wondering do i just have to apply for study permit extension or I need to apply for visa extension too? I couldn’t find any information on that. I’m so confused.

Study permit first; you only need a valid TRV if you leave the country and want to come back.

You definitely need a SP extension, if you apply for SP extension outside Canada you will automatically get a TRV as well. If you apply in Canada you will only het SP and TRV is a different application.

You only need TRV to be able to travel to Canada.
