Hi everyone,

Here is my situation, which I could not find any description of online;

Myself and my son (15 years old) had been invited to the citizenship ceremony to take the oath together in last August. Since he is above 14, he had to attend the ceremony with me. However, unfortunately he was away with his mother and could not attend the ceremony with me. I took the oath alone and became a Canadian Citizen.
After our correspondence with IRCC officer, my son received another invitation to attend the ceremony in following weeks. However, this time both parents will be travelling during his ceremony date. On the other hand, we have our daughter (21 years old) who will be available that day to be with my son during his ceremony.
My question is, is it mandatory that one of the parents should be with my son during ceremony? Or can my daughter alone accompany my son during his ceremony? Is there anyway that both parents can sign a document to allow our daughter to be with our son during ceremony?

Thanks in advance.

Call IRCC and ask them. That's your best bet. In addition; did the minor's oath invitation indicate that a minor must be accompanied by a parent or parents?

Many thanks for your suggestion. In the invitation letter, there is no indication that a minor must be accompanied by a parent or parents. It's not even mentioning anywhere in IRCC web sites. I will call and/or send a letter to IRCC. Hope they reply on time.

Still, I am open to any other suggestions.

Hi everyone,

I just want to share the latest status and answer my own question for others who may have the same concerns in the future.

Even though I could not get a reply to my written letter to IRCC, my son (15 years old) went to the ceremony with his older sister (without parents) and attended it without any questions or problems. I just learned one condition, a minor can only be a citizen after (or at the same time) one of the parents, not before.

Regards.

1. Not quite right, minors can apply for citizenship (with parents/guardians permission) if the parents have no intention of taking out Canadian citizenship.
