Mine and my son's citizenship oath has been scheduled in a couple of weeks, but my son (who is 5 years old) and is my co-applicant is currently not in Canada. He will anyway not be attending the Oath ceremony as it's not mandatory for him to attend. My question is, is it okay for him not to be in Canada even though he will not be attending the Oath ceremony?

If it's not mandatory for him to attend, then who cares where he is ? It should be fine according to your "it's not mandatory for him to attend" statement.

This is interesting, though your child is not required to attend the ceremony, you will have to cut his PR card as a part of the ceremony. Given that the child is not in Canada, and you don’t have his/her PR card.
not sure if the officer will allow for the process to proceed or ask you to wait till your child’s return.

My advise is either call IRCC to clarify, or ask to reschedule oath till your child returns!
