My partner and I will be coming with our 5 month old to Toronto to work.

Anyone have any idea of health insurance companies? We will be applying to ohip but obviously the early months won't be ohip covered

Whether or not you take gap covering health insurance is entirely optional and up to the individual. But how would you manage if you were involved and injured in car accident? You would have to pay for everything out of pocket and that could run to tens of thousands of dollars. I suspect the $650 cost for medical insurance would look like a bargain!

Bad advice. It is never advisable to be in a foreign country without insurance, particularly with a baby. One emergency could result in a hospital bill for hundreds of dollars or more.

That’s ridiculous advice . Case in point . I just had a physical last year , healthy as a horse , one day nauseated at work, stomach pain , fast forward to evening , in emergency being told by Dr your appendix has burst and if we don’t take it out , it’s curtains . Appendix out , overnight stay in hospital. I’m covered by OHIP, but how much would it have cost if I was a non insured individual?
Or what if you’re driving and get hit by a bad driver ?
Point is , no one can predict the future

Even my 'expensive' gap insurance with GMS at a single payment of $650 for 90 days works out at $7 a day - about the price of a Tim Hortons soup and coffee.

Still think that is expensive?

But as I say, please yourself!

Insurance is especially important for children. Children get sick or break bones so easily. Kids can have a febrile seizure just by getting a fever with a simple cold. As others have said unless you have millions of dollars and can afford a large hospital bill it is much better to get insurance.
