Are Immigration Record of Landing and Confirmation of Permanent Residence required for Oath Ceremony

Hi all,

I will be taking the oath ceremony in 3 weeks. On the document requirements CIC mentioned:

All of the original documents in your possession – Immigration Record of Landing (IMM1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM5292 or IMM5688);

I tried finding them (all my paper docs, emails and MyCIC) but no luck. I believe when I did my landing at Carway border, the border officer take both of them. However I do have a VISA sticker on my passport with the exact same number of the COPR which I found on MyCIC. COPR on MyCIC is not downloadable though.

From the wording of the requirement, in your possession sounds like meaning only if you still have them. Either IROL OR COPR would do the job. Not necessary both.

I have also been searching the forum and I got mixed answers: half people said we must bring both of them but the other half said not necessary - no one really checks.

I wonder what I should do in this case. Obviously I don't want to mess up or risk it at the door.

You may require the CoPR. You are given it back when you land, you also need it when you come to claim government pension (and more?) later in life.

Do they always ask for it? No. But they may do. You should request a replacement and personally I'd take the paper saying it's been requested to the ceremony and if they ask for the CoPR show that and whatever else you have, and cross your fingers. Worst case they should just delay it, best case they won't ask ...

You don't just need the oath letter, you definitely need things like the PR card as that has to be surrendered after taking the oath ...

Also, I won't be able to claim the pension until 30 years after. A lot of the processes and requirements will be changed for sure even in 10 or 5 years and protecting a piece of paper for 30 years doesn't sound practical at all. If they still need it then I will apply a new one.

My lawyer (for PR) also told me to keep CoPR for life in a safe place.

The CoPR is a very important document! You will need it in future as well (no matter if you become a citizen or not!) and I don't see why protecting your important documents and IDs sound impractical to you. So go ahead and request a replacement as soon as possible. Do not underestimate the importance of it. It could potentially delay your oath ceremony.

After reading comments from you and @jc94 , I think you guys are right. I will submit the VoS for CoPR tomorrow and hopeful they won't give me a hard time on the oath ceremony.
