I am glad that my family supports me for everything, and my mom understands that I would not go back ever again.

I prefer USA than Canada honestly, but I am ready to give up everything I have built up here ( I’m gonna be kicked out anyways). Shoulda gone to Canada for my masters degree 5 years ago if I knew this was gonna happen. It really upsets me seeing people live free here and I am the one who suffers.

Any advice and share of thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Hi there...

I want to tell you that there are many people in a similar situation as you are in and many of them successfully find ways to make it work, so do not lose hope. You can find a pragmatic solution for your situation by being brutally honest and realistic about your long term and short term plans. You will need to be as realistic as possible in terms of what you can do and what you can't as well as having a sound financial plan.

With two years of work experience and masters degree from a US university, I think you could easily get into a Ph.D. program both in the US as well as Canada. However, if you have issues with references and what not, it might be challenging for you. Because you are working full time for a while now, you could always get a letter of recommendation from your employer and one or two from professors whom you think wouldn't mind giving you a generic letter ( which won't necessarily identify the best in you but should suffice). If you can get a glowing recommendation from your employer that will really help and also getting a good GRE score helps. I am not sure whether your Master's is in a STEM field. Your other academic option could be pursuing an MBA in Canada, this is a tertiary qualification in a sense as it can increase your chances of finding employment in Canada significantly once you finish. But MBA is not everyone's cup of tea, a lot of people from STEM fields may not particularly enjoy it. However, a Canadian Ph.D. in your case might not be a bad option, yes it may cost about 3-5 years of your life, but it also will open more doors in terms of a job.

Now I assume you are somewhere around 29 based on your comments and as you may know, you will lose points for age, I think it's about 5 points every year. This year, the CIC draws have become very competitive and it seems scores lesser than 460 are no longer considered safe. So getting a Canadian credential could be one way to circumvent your immigration problems as well as a chance to increase your points through Canadian education and possibly through work opportunities. Also, with a good degree program, you will be eligible for post-grad work permit which will allow you to work for about 3 years ( mind you, there are some assumptions here, some work permits are valid only for a year, you will need to check with the institution).

The other option is to seek asylum in either USA or Canada. Even though the current situation in the US is very much anti-immigration, I think you can still apply for asylum claiming the exact reason you mentioned in your post. They may grant you asylum. However, this requires a lot of verifiable documentation and procedural protocols, so please consider working with an immigration attorney who specializes in asylum and human rights. Btw, there are a lot of these attorneys who will work pro-bono ( for free). There are a lot of regulations which surround this and only a lawyer can help. Best of luck.

Thanks for your insightful advice. I might start applying for a STEM degree in Canada honestly, since I am definitely not a MBA material.

Hi All,

I am in the pool currently under Canadian Experience Class with 452 points. But i recently finished my work in Canada and moved out. I updated my country of residence and work history details with the end date to my Canadian job. Under "How much money will you bring to Canada "? I left as 0 earlier as I was working in Canada. But now that I am not.. do I need to update it or Can I leave it as it is ?

What is it that you did would make you worried about getting arrested in China?

Though I'm very positive but at the back of my mind, CIC can even reach its target for 2019 with current number of ITAs i.e. 3,350 until the end of the year with fortnightly draws. I'm sure not all ITAs are converted into PR and they invited more than they set for 2018 target - same may follow this year but we cannot ignore the fact that they can still reach the target with same number of ITAs i.e. 3,350. I'm in the same boat as all of you, just reiterating!!!
