Which IT skill in demand in Canada

Hi,

I have received ITA and I am applying with all docs soon.

I am also graduating from MS in Computer Science soon, so I need to choose what speciality, skill to work on.

Which skill is in most demand/easier to find job in Canada?

Java and Spring?
Python and Django?
Javascript and Angular?

I am by my masters AI researcher, but I found out very few if any vacancy announcement for deep learning guys.

So what do you suggest I work on before I move to Canada?

There are 800 companies of AI in Canada. And Canadian Government has also created an advisory council recently.

I am sure you will find a job as AI researcher in Canada more easily than in any other field.

AI/ML/Deep Learning is very much in demand in Canada. It depends on where you did your Master's from, of course. If you did it from the best university in your country you won't have trouble getting a job.

yes, that is the point, it is about proving your background as against Canadian standards. My university is not the best one and top 1100 university in the world by QS ranking.

In deep learning, you have to have great credentials and requirements start from Masters and PhD preferred. So me as an immigrant with no Canadian experience will have hard time getting job it seems.

The different story is with developers, their requirements start from high school and bachelor's is the standard. So I just thought I would have more chance finding a job as a developer.

What do you think?

Yes, that's accurate - you will be competing against people from Waterloo for the top AI/ML jobs and it will be very hard to get your resume noticed.

For developers, Canada has a lot of old fashioned enterprises/banks/industrial companies that are running on Java and also the .Net stack. These aren't jobs with the next cool startup, but then they are easier to get interviews for.

Also, if you happen to know any COBOL, that's a good skill to have. There are banks that will pay you lots of money for that skill.

Python/Django.. my sense is that there aren't that many openings here relative to the US. However, I could be wrong, and also Python is used a lot in the data science world. If you're good at that you may find jobs in that field.

Javascript/Angular isn't a bad skill set, lots of new companies and startups are looking for this. Add React to this skill set if you can.

I would recommend that you search for dev jobs in the Greater Toronto Area, Vancouver, Montreal (French may be required), Kitchener and Waterloo and see which skills are in demand.

I have a question on years of experience. As I am a fresh graduate and will have only one year experience by the time I move to Canada, will this be enough? The most job openings I see on indeed.ca have like 3 years and more experience.

Therefore, how are jobs like for someone with a master's degree but only a year of experience?

So focus on how to address on these points. You could do a bridging course, try to intern/volunteer to gain some experience.. OR network and convince hiring managers on why they should hire you. Nothing is impossible.

so my specific question would be that vacancies listed in indeed.com mostly have 3 or more years of experience as a requirement.

Are they punctual with regards to the number of years? do they reject if someone with only 1 year experience applies but is otherwise suitable?

we wont be able to generalize all hiring managers. But I can say if someone, even without the required experiencing or education, but can demonstrate the skills required for the role and convince me , I would hire them.

You will have to have PR or the ability to work in Canada to be taken seriously. Actually just hear the unemployment rate in Quebec City is 3% so there are areas that many new immigrants don’t consider versus Alberta that is closer to 10% and Toronto probably 7-8%. These comments relate to IT not all industries.

Thanks, your post encourages me to specialize in something that is not as broad as Java/Spring.... hmm... But that also means some risk, because I may have to specialize in something which may not be in demand in a year or two years time...
