Hello,
I am a Canadian citizen and my partner is an American citizen. We live in California. I would like to sponsor her for permanent residency via common law partner, planning on submitting the application in Feb 2020. We already purchased a house in Toronto that we could move into at that time. It seems that outland application approval times are slightly quicker than inland. Given that we want to move to Toronto sooner rather than later, if we submitted the application in California in Feb 2020 outland, THEN moved to Toronto, would our application remain outland or would it revert to inland. Are there any risks/complications going this route, rather than applying outland and waiting in the US for approval or moving to Toronto in Feb 2020 and applying inland. TIA, Adam

Hey Adam, your story sounds almost identical to mine. I am Canadian, sponsoring an American. Currently live in California, moving to Vancouver though. If you apply in Feb 2020, then you would have to wait 4-6 months to move to Toronto. You would be better off applying 4-6 months in advance of when you plan on moving. As far as I understand it, you could apply in Feb 2020, but your partner could only visit Canada as a tourist until they are approved to live in Canada which takes 4-6 months.

Hey thanks! Sorry for the delay, I thought I replied to you next day but guess not. Had another question...since your situation seems similar to mine...are you using an attorney to assist your application or not? We are just trying to figure out if its worth the cost to use a lawyer. Thanks again !

Why are you wanting to wait until Feb 2020?? Canadian / US combinations for outland sponsorship are normally processed in 6 - 7 months start to finish, so why not submit outland now? Nothing to stop you 'landing to declare PR' in Canada then turning right around and going back to the US for months to sell up then land later 'as settler'. Absolutely no need for a lawyer unless your case is complicated or unless you like spending money for someone else to do stuff you could do yourself (i.e. you are 'cash rich / time poor').
