Hi all,
My friend going to be new Canadian citizen soon wants to apply for Canadian passport, but he is planning to travel the next day after oath. Can he send the application by post after the oath? His family plans to send the passport to him after it arrives. Any issues with that?

If your friends plans to travel the day after his oath. I don’t see how this can be possible if he is planning to travel on Canadian passport.
Your friend needs to wait 2 days after his oath before he can apply for a Canadian passport.
The best way to quickly get his passport is to apply in person at a Passport Canada Office and request for priority processing with additional fees .
He can still mail out his application and travel on his home country’s passport but there may be some risks of doing so. Let’s say his application is deemed incomplete for some reason, this will cause a huge hassle...
might be better to apply in person before traveling.

1) The best plan is for him to apply in person before travelling. But he needs to wait till his ECAS status to show "Complete" before he can do so. Fortunately, this is usually the case for most people the next day after oath. His family can then mail him the passport once it arrives.
2) If he is from a visa exempt country, he can apply for special authorization once he is outside Canada.
3) He can mail his passport application and has his family sending him the passport. As scorph mentioned, his passport application might not be approved due to incompletion or security verification. In this case, he can still go back to Canada by land with his citizenship certificate if he can fly to the USA.

Thank you canvan and scorph. He plans to travel with his home country passport, which is not visa exempt. My only doubt now is, is there any clause which says you have be inside Canada when sending the application by post.

When you go to Canada passport website, you have the option to choose to "apply for the passport outside Canada and USA". He can do this in his home country in person at the Canadian embassy. There is an option for urgent processing with additional fee, and the fee for the passport is also higher compared to applying within Canada. The form he needs to fill is also different. Just follow the instruction on the website.

Yes. It isn't possible. After taking the oath, you have to wait two business days to apply for your passport.
