Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help me with my question, I landed with my family at Toronto 1st of August 2018, upon arrival I got sin number and advised I will need to apply for health card 3 month from entering Canada, I set up my visitor insurance to cover us for the first three month, but problem was when we tried to apply for the health card , Service Ontario advised my date started from the date permanent resident card issue date is, which was 20/10/2018. Now they told me I need to wait another 3 month before I can get health Card.

It is not a big problem to take another insurance but why then my COPR letter stated 3 month from entering Canada?

Could anyone let me know the correct process please, and should I take again visitor insurance (although insurance stating if you receiving benefit you can't take visitor insurance) with child benefit in place.

Confused dot com :)

Hows that possible. Ontario website clearly states that person has to be in Ontario for atleast 153 days before he/she can apply for health card:

Who qualifies
To qualify for OHIP, you must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below plus at least one of the additional requirements.

To meet the minimum qualifications you must:

  • be physically in Ontario for 153 days in any 12‑month period
  • be physically in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after you began living in the province
  • make Ontario your primary home
You must also meet at least one of the following additional requirements. You:

  • are a Canadian citizen
  • are an Indigenous person (registered under the federal Indian Act)
  • are a permanent resident (formerly called a “landed immigrant”)
  • have applied for permanent residence, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has confirmed that:
    • you meet the eligibility requirements to apply
    • you have not yet been denied
  • are in Ontario on a valid work permit and are working full-time in Ontario, for an Ontario employer, for at least six months
    • your spouse and any dependents also qualify if you do
  • are in Ontario on a valid work permit under the federal Live-in Caregiver Program
  • are a convention refugee or other protected person (as defined by Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada)
  • have a Temporary Resident Permit (only certain case types, e.g. 86 through 95)
  • are a clergy member who can legally stay in Canada and is ministering full time in Ontario for at least six months
    • your spouse and any dependents also qualify if you do

You can apply before but you won't get the actual card (or coverage) until meeting those requirements.

I still don't understand. lets say I have Ontario driver's licence(which I believe is must for applying a health card Or any other photo ID), so i can just go to health office any day and apply for a card. ?
Which 3 months you guys are talking about ? above info from website says 153 days( which 5 months and 3 days) so I will have to wait 5 months or 3 months. right ?

I don't know what you mean by health office, are you talking about ServiceOntario? Also, re-read the requirements.

You need only meet one of those 3 requirements. Making Ontario your primary home is sufficient.

"When your coverage starts
It can take up to three months for your OHIP coverage to begin after you’ve been approved."

Yes I'm talking about Service ontario.

You are misreading it my friend. it says "you must meet all of the minimum qualifications" PLUS one of the additional requirements.

So basically I have to meet all 3 of these:
  • be physically in Ontario for 153 days in any 12‑month period
  • be physically in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after you began living in the province
  • make Ontario your primary home"
and any one of these :
  • are a Canadian citizen
  • are an Indigenous person (registered under the federal Indian Act)
  • are a permanent resident (formerly called a “landed immigrant”)
  • have applied for permanent residence, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has confirmed that:
