Planning on living in oakville, how to manage

Hi guys, I'm landing hopefully in March 2019, and planning on living in oakville since I found is best for small families, safe, cheaper rents and great schools. I am constrained by french public schools, which are not that abundant in GTA, but oakville has the best one.

My issue is that probably i will be finding work in Toronto and I know that commuting is a pain. First, do you think it is doable? Second, if both parents work in Toronto, how do people manage picking up children from bus stops and getting them home? Will it be cost effective? Any opinions/suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

Oakville is definitely a nice place to live in for families. We planned to live there as well (it was listed as destination on our COPR) but ended up staying in Missisauga as we had family there. May likely move there or Burlington when times comes to buy a house. If both parents are working in Toronto you will likely need to apply for a before and after school program. This will allow you to drop the kids early at school (7-7:30AM) and pick them up late (6-6:30PM)These can be costly especially if your income is on the high end and you do not qualify for the Halton region child care subsidy. Keep in mind that there are many employers are moving to Mississauga and Oakville and you may be able to find employment locally depending of your industry.

You can take the Go Train to Toronto it should take you a bit over an hour to Union Station downtown.

Oakville isn't known for lower rents so I'm a bit puzzled by that statement. The high ranking schools is partially related to the high housing prices in Oakville.

Tons of people commute from Oakville to downtown Toronto. If both of parents end up working downtown, you will have to make arrangements and pay for child care.

In terms of being cost effective, hard to say. Your real estate costs may be less but other costs (e.g. commuting costs) will be more.

I was puzzled too. Everywhere i read it says real estate should be higher in oakville. As far as buying a house, yes i can see they are pricey, however when i was researching renting, i found that town houses and detached homes are far less expensive. You would pay around 2500 for a 3 bedrooms house, in toronto the places i found with same qualities, would cost over 4000. Am i missing anything?

The area i am looking at is around sheridan college and not by the lake where the mansions are.

You may be looking at a pocket that is primarily rented to college students. You'll have to see what the quality of the rentals are and whether landlords want to rent to you or whether you want to live on a street with only college students. In the GTA availability when you are looking to rent often is an issue. I know you are thinking about school district but make sure to think about commute time and expense. If both parents are working most after school programs charge you when you are late for pick-up.
