Applying for citizenship with an expired passport

Hi everybody,

I am willing to apply for citizenship in a few months. I have recently started looking at the forms and the required docs to get everything ready and to avoid any delay, but unfortunately I figured out that my passport expired last April ( 2 months ago ), and I must submit a photocopy of my passport that shows the expiration date, and I should explain to CIC if there is any gap, that might raise many question marks on my application. I took a quick round looking to similar threads here in this forum, 2 opinions were raised for discussion as a solution but not sure which one could be helpful in my situation:

Either, I can renew my passport ASAP, means the gap will not be more than 3 months; it could be explained easily.
Or, I leave it as is and attach a cover letter says I had only one passport and I didn't renew it for I had no plan at all to leave Canada.

So, If there is any body went through same problem or anybody expert with citizenship application issues could help me here. Thank you.

Note: I landed on May 1st 2014 using the passport that issued in April 2012 and expired in April 2017, , and I have never left Canada.

I have the same question. Mine expired 2015 April, and I have no plan to renew it.
I'll be eligible for applying for Canadian citizenship as soon as C6 comes into effect in Fall this year.
I read somewhere an expired passport is not a problem when applying for Canadian citizenship, but just need some confirmation from others who have had first hand recent experience with going through the process with an expired one.

My daughter and myself applied last September her passport expired July of last year it wasn't a problem had our oath ceremony in April

Did you get your citizenship? did they ask any explanation letter or returned your application anything because i will be qualify on August 11 and my passport will expire on September 11 but i am not thinking about renew or extension until i get Canadian Passport.

Yes I have recently gotten the Canadian citizenship, I had no issue because of my expired passport. You can apply for citizenship with an expired travel document but you need to attach an explanation letter along with the application.
