It depends what you mean by relatively cheap rent? If you want cheap rent forget Toronto. No idea about tax. A quick google search will give you the results for that. At the end of the day, it's a personal choice. But I would say you sound that you need to research it a lot more as it is a huge decision.

Same dilemma, here. I know I don't want to be in a very crowded place. So, small towns for me. Less salaries but meh, whatever. As long as I can eat and pay my rent.

Have you done any research on the matter?
yep.. I have written a code to scrape Statcan for me to get estimates for median rent, crime rates, unemployment rates, demographics and the like across provinces. Now I am analyzing the results based on my preference.

Well good luck with finding your desired destination
Cheers. How about you? Have you decided? Are you going to look for a job once you get there?

Simply by researching and then choosing a city based on the availability of jobs in my field. Everything else is secondary to finding employment first, if it happens to align with some other nice things, then hey, bonus!

In that case, I guess it would make the most sense to look for somewhere with a low cost of living and good/reliable public transport for commuting if you don't plan to buy a car.

These websites are useful for comparing the cost of living between cities:
