Hello,

My mother entered canada with a multiple entry visa on Sept 17th, 2017. Her initial plan was to fly back home by Mar 15th as she can only stay for 6 months at a time. Now we decided to keep her longer with us however it already passed 30 day deadline for visa extension. Now we have only 10 days left for her departure, its there a way to extend her stay? Can I still apply for the visit visa extension? or Can I take her to Canada/US border to re-enter canada to reset her status?

It’s not really a deadline, but more of a recommendation, if I’m not mistaken. Someone else can confirm or correct me if I’m wrong. You can still apply and she will be under implied status until the decision arrives. That is also preferable to a border run. If she doesn’t have a US visa, I’m not sure if flagpoling would work anyway for this type of case.

Hi

The 30 days is a recommendation, not a requirement. A person can apply for an extension up until their status expires.

Thanks a lot for your answers. I tried to call the visa extension office so many times but no one answers or there is no wait time, the system just ends the call stating high volume of callers. Anyhow, due to the fact that she has to leave right away if the extension application gets rejected for some reason, she decided not to apply for the extension and leave Canada with in 6 months as per initial plan. Next time I will try to apply at least 70 days (visit visa extension processing time 67 days) before so that we get the extension approved before the status expires.

Whether you apply 70 days before or 1 day before, it doesn't make a difference. If her current status expires while waiting for the extension to be processed, she will have valid Implied Status until a decision is made.
