Museum NOC codes??

Hi All


I am working towards my first year of experience here in Canada. Currently I work in a science museum as a guide / science presenter, as I understand this would fall under code 5212 ( Technical occupations related to museums and art galleries) and my job does include the main duties it describes.


I am potentially looking at a promotion to become an educator at the museum to teach visiting school groups. The nearest / only NOC code I can see this falling under is code 1123- (Professional occupations in advertising, marketing and public relations). Under this code the job title museum educator is listed, however the majority of the main duties it describes seem to have no relevance to a museum educator. There is only one listed that seems to describe the job- but none of the main duties directly describe teaching or educating.

• Prepare and deliver educational and publicity programs and informational materials to increase awareness of museums, galleries and other tourist attractions

Do you think this is the most relevant code to use? It seems 1123 is a very wide-ranging group so maybe this is why details are so vague?


Any input and help would be greatly appreciated.

First, regardless of job title, you need to go by the lead statement (the first paragraph at the top of each NOC) and the job duties and responsibilities. And you know the word "educator" can be used to mean a lot of different things.

I think that if you are still conducting programs in/at the museum itself, you should stick with 5212. But if you are going out to the schools to promote the museum, then you can use 1123. (The different environment is part of the lead statement).

Make sure the main duties listed match what you did at your job

• if they don't, you will need to find a different job title with duties that match yours

Thanks. What I'm stuck on is this though. I've read the lead statement and the main duties listed.

However because the NOC code covers such different jobs, the main duties are very wide ranging it only has one main duty for my role

• Museum interpreters conduct tours of museums, gallery exhibitions and historical, heritage and other sites, answer inquiries and provide information concerning exhibits or sites.

So as this is clearly a summary, is there somewhere I can find a full list of main duties or can I assume that as long as my job description matches this, then that will be fine?

And sorry, what I meant by someone official. Was is there someone I can ring/ email to check my NOC classification? Rather than self assess and find out in a years time that it's actually the wrong NOC code? Or would this be a lawyers job?

Ah so... yes and no. You can send a request to ESDC (they are responsible for the NOC codes, not IRCC). There's a link to contact them here -

HOWEVER, the caveat is, ESDC is not IRCC and they develop and use the NOC codes for different purposes than IRCC. You can get an opinion from ESDC, but it is not binding on IRCC.

Yeah, the NOC system is imperfect and some of these "broad category" NOCs can be difficult. It is partly a process of elimination - use the NOC that "best" fits your job. If it is truly an awkward fit, you can always write a letter of explanation about why you chose the NOC you did, and why you are not certain about it. I don't think that is necessary in your case (you work in a fairly specialized environment), but I have not seen your list of job duties/responsibilities, so that is your call.
