Hello there friends,

I am struggling with grabbing proof for my common-law relationship for my upcoming PR application. If anyone can shed a light on my concern, it would be really appreciated.

I just have a couple of questions regarding the letter from landlord and my changed status in CRA.

1. I have been living in my partner's parents house in Canada and my partner's father is gladly willing to write the letter and notarize it and send it to us. Would you guys think is this below format would be quite enough to use? (or does it need to be hand-writed by his father?)

To whom it may concern,

I, the undersigned, owner of the residence house located at ____________________

Hereby certify that (my partner's name) who is my son is residing at the address mentioned above since April 2014. I also certify that (my name) is residing at the same address since March 2016.

To the best of my knowledge both (my name) and (my partner's name) are using the address above as their primary residence in a genuine and romantic relationship since the date of (my name) moving in March 2016 until the present.

Sincerely,

(signature)

2. We have been living together since March 2016 and thus, I believe we became a common-law relationship as of March 2017. The thing is that we haven't realized that we are in common-law until recently (since we are both international and had not familiar to the terms of common-law relationship).
When I visit to CRA website to change our marital status, it asked since when we have been in common-law. Does it okay to enter the date as March 2017? Hope it was not too late to change this :(

When I applied, I wasn't able to provide most of the common law proof either. We were living in Japan and couldn't provide anything like shared utilities, shared banking etc etc So we just wrote a letter explaining why that stuff wasn't provided.
I think a letter from the Landlord is a good idea, I think the format is fine.

Thanks for your warm comment. Me and my partner does not have much proof, either. What we have collected so far was joint-account which we recently opened, a letter from his father (which will be made soon), the same mailing address on letters and bills, airplane tickets we have traveled together, pictures and etc.... This is because we are from other cultures where there is no concept of common-law relationship, and we haven't realized about our relationship as a common-law until recently. Anyways, hope we get all this through well and apply for our PR successfully.... :)
