CIT 0177 is for crown servants or their family members.

You need to fill Physical presence calculator for the days spent outside Canada:

You need to mark NO for the question Have you travelled outside Canada. Next do not fill CIT 0177 as its only if you have worked as a crown servant outside Canada. BUT attach a covering letter addressed to Case processing officer explaining that you had left Canada for 4 months to home country due to .............. and not filling CIT 0177 as it is not applicable in your case. I have done the same way since I had been 3 times to home country for short duration only.

You should say "Yes" and don't attach any letter however fill the physical presence calculator as per the link I have mentioned.

Nothing to do with physical presence calculator.
Sandhu is referring to the question on CIT0002 - Application for citizenship Adults Question 9c. Here if he ticks YES and does not fill CIT0177- Residence outside Canada he will be surely getting back his application.

Sandhu. Read this thread and decide for yourself.
https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/threads/second-thoughts-question-9c-did-you-live-outside-canada.524444/

Also another senior observation.

The CIT 01777 form is used only if the applicant for citizenship claims to be eligible for credit toward the physical presence requirement for time spent outside Canada based on either:
-- the PR-applicant was employed abroad as a Crown servant, or
-- the PR-applicant was living with a Canadian (citizen or PR) family member (such as a spouse) who was employed abroad as a Crown servant
Thus, very few Permanent Residents applying for citizenship will submit the CIT 0177 form.
In particular, you do NOT use or submit this form unless you (the PR applying for citizenship) have been employed abroad as a Crown servant, or your spouse is a PR and was employed abroad as a Crown servant.

Got it. That question is confusing. I think the question should have been elaborated more clearly.
If the person has not worked as crown servant or as crown servant family member then he should select "No" however the physical presence calculator sheet is still required to be filled/printed/signed and attached with the application as it's a required part.
