Hi,

I believe that once I get an ITA, the police verification from the FBI will be a bottleneck, since they quote 8-10 weeks as processing time. What is the average time I can expect to get the verification completed, including the shipping duration? Would love to hear folks' experience with this.

I sent all documents to FBI on June 6th requesting verification.

Thanks!

Typically, once your application package is delivered to the FBI, there will be three wait periods, one large, one small, and last one depends on how where the results are being sent to.

Wait one: Package delivered to start of processing - Usually between 55-70 days (This is the biggest wait, and since these are paper based applications, we can assume the FBI has a huge backlog).
Wait two: Processing start to processing complete / results dispatched - (If no criminality is involved) usually 2-3 business days
Wait three: Results dispatched to results actually reaching you - depends on where the result package is being sent to. Domestic US packages are usually 5-7 days, international can be 14-21 days (based on US Postage)

There are two main indicators you can look for:

a. If you call the FBI helpline (mentioned on their site), they will tell you which packages they are currently opening, e.g. if you call them today, they may tell you something like they are opening packages delivered to them on Apri 12th or something.

b. If you sent credit card information as form of payment, as soon as processing starts, you will see a charge authorization on your credit card (usually this means your result is near).

Pretty easy to do application but it is taking about 3-3.5 months nowadays. So plan accordingly. See - https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks

Basically, you need -
a. fingerprint(s) in form FD-258 (I suggest obtaining multiple fingerprints from professional fingerprinting service, I did mine from a local sheriff's office)
b. Application form found in their website
c. CC authorization form or Money Order ($18).
d. Letter explaining why you want FBI PCC. (Not sure if this is required but I sent one anyway)

No, as you can see from my signature below I was granted an extension to upload FBI PCC. I gave them the USPS receipt, pdf of tracking result, email communication with FBI asking for my application update every once in while and mentioned about the situation in LoE with expected reception date.

I had another question - What is the process of getting finger print from local sherrifs office. I mean do they ask the purpose and what documents do they seek ?

Thanks again!

Take a photo ID and just walk-in. I took my passport. You can also take blank FD-258 sheets for them to print on, otherwise generally they have their own such sheets too which you can buy, just that it costs a bit more. I don't think the reason is critical, you can just say FBI background check.

In addition to the very helpful posts above, I would like to add that since calling FBI everytime was a hassle, I would simply use the following tracker and sort it by date documents were delivered. Helped me keep an eye out on the timeline with a single click. They are currently processing September end packages, so the timeline is well above 12 weeks at this point.

Thank you so much for taking time out to reply. This answers my doubts!

Hello cc31,

I wanted to ask why did you suggest to get multiple fingerprinting done from professional if we are getting it done from local sheriff anyway ?
Does local sheriff provides multiple prints on additional request and charge?

Thanks
