Anyone here is planning or has made the move with their pets? How is that process??
I moved with my cat. Just make sure you get the rabies vaccination paperwork and health certificate and you should be good to go. I came through YVR and they didn't exam him. In fact, the agent spent more time saying how pretty he was than doing the actual paperwork. lol

@canada_eagle , another group would just be a supplement, at least that's my intention!

@kynno, we'll be taking two cats. It seems like we just need to show proof of rabies vaccination (or commit to getting it done within two weeks of arrival, which just no, I'll go to my normal vet and not add finding one immediately in TO to my already huge to-do list lol) and have them examined at the border. These are the two links I have saved on the matter: Importing cats and the pet food policy (again, minimizing my to-do list on the Canadian side by maxxing out my allowance with that). Hopefully if you have dogs the process is as simple.

Honestly I'm more worried about the long drive with them and fitting a litter box into a small apartment (instead of hiding them away in the basement like now) :p I'll be driving a car with the two not laid-back cats and a toddler while my husband drives a moving van. Heaven help me!
Oh wow! Sounds like you are going to have your plate really full with that move! Thanks for the links. I'll try to get as much info as possible.

I have a 9 months old black lab that I got when he was 7 weeks old. I've grown really attached to him and so just the thought of having to give him up if I'm to leave just breaks my heart and I don't want to do that. So just knowing that this process is not a huge hurdle gives me some peace of mind already :)

I mean, it beats having to fly and pay for that and movers by a ton but it will be 8-10 (please not more!) hours of my life that I won't be eager to repeat! I'm going to ask our vet about cat sedatives once the move is closer to hopefully help cut down on the number of angry critters in the car. I know they're not advised for air travel but hopefully they'll be safe for that use.

I'm glad you should be able to bring your little guy with you :) Labs are great dogs!

Welcome! There are a few of us going to Toronto and around that time, too! I don't know about you, but it feels like just yesterday we were tentatively signing up for the IELTS unsure if the CRS would even get low enough for us to get picked! But here we are :D

We need @tjsecondtry in this thread, btw!

Any thoughts from anyone else re: WhatsApp vs facebook for a group? Another consideration is that our phone numbers are likely going to change as we move and WhatsApp has some process you have to do in that case: https://faq.whatsapp.com/en/bb/28030001/ Not the worst, but another thing to do (and correctly) among a whole list of practicalities we'll be dealing with so I'm leaning towards facebook to keep that simpler.
Thanks for the shoutout, @moose17 . I need to pickup from the beginning of this thread, but without any context, I'd prefer facebook.

I'm on whatsapp all the time these days, ever since I began this immigration process and joined groups
I am more sporadic on facebook, but recently a Toronto housing group got brought over to facebook because whatsapp groups have a membership limit, so I am going to have to check facebook more often.
So, I am fine with either.

Well our Canada adventure continues. We got our SIN from Service Canada in Charlottetown, PEI. It was painless as numerous post on the forum had previously indicated.

Banks however are proving to be a bit more complicated. Unlike US banks, you cannot just walk into a bank to open a account, you have to make appointments first. We knew this before hand but it is still a hassle. We talked to Scotiabank over chat to confirm we could use our US address when we open the account, however when I called them to make the appointment the lady insisted I could not do that. Sigh. So scratch Scotia-bank for now. Have a appointment with TDbank tomorrow, hopefully that goes smoothly.

We did our landing today at Toronto. Everything was uncomplicated and smooth. The immigration lady had my kid help stamp his passport :). The customs dude was very friendly and we just ended up talking about soccer teams and such. Staying in a hotel tonight before flying out to PEI. We are PNP nominees and are trying to figure out settling there.

All the best to the rest of you.
Fantastic!!

For anyone here who is interested in my background....

I'll be starting school in January on a student visa, hoping to raise our CRS to be eligible for OINP. I'm watching apartments now, so that when the right opportunity comes along, I'll be able to grab it.

@tjsecondtry are you on the Toronto housing whatsapp and now Facebook group? Someone recently mentioned it in a couple OINP whatsapp groups I'm in and I joined. Although my move is a while away, I want to get a better feel for the Toronto housing market in the coming months because I want to buy property to live in and rent out when a good opportunity presents itself, and live in cheap shared housing from when I land until then. PM me (anyone) if you want the link to the facebook group. (I'm a bit concerned about privacy on facebook)

Thanks for sharing your experience. Do let us know how it goes tomorrow. I also wonder what the interest rates are like on savings accounts (they are terrible in the US so I have online savings accounts) and if you can open Canadian bank accounts online. TD Bank also has a US presence, and I have a US checking account here. I wonder if it is easy to transfer funds between US and Canadian accounts if you have both at TD Bank and if they give you a good exchange rate?

We were not planning to open a savings account, just checking. There are internet only banks here (like we have Capitalone360 & Ally in the US) who I am sure give a decent interest rate like their US counterparts. You can open the internet ones online, however I think you probably need a Canadian account to do the initial transfer so new immigrants are stuck there.

Banks give decent conversion rates. Second only to the peer to peer transfer. You are always going to loose some money when you convert though.

I've heard good things about transferring funds between the two TD banks. I'm interested in hearing how it goes for @canada_eagle tomorrow, too, since we want to open a Canadian TD account the first morning of our landing trip. I opened a US account last week and am waiting on the signature card to finalize it. THAT was pain since I'm not in a state they service so I couldn't open it online and I couldn't get the nice bonus they're offering for opening checking accounts right now.

I'll start a secret facebook group in the next few days so if anyone's not using a secondary account they won't have to worry about friends or family seeing them join (apologies if the title ends up awful, I'll take no offense at better suggestions!). I'll post when it's done and if it catches on, great, if not, no worries. I'll join the WhatsApp group too for good measure. That was the bigger privacy issue for me for a while because one of those obnoxious identity sites had my phone number listed! It took months to get that taken down

Peer to peer transfer? What peer to peer transfer platform(s) have you been using to get better exchange rates?

Hey, the reason I have a US checking account with TD Bank is because they were offering some nice account opening bonuses last year.

Yes, I have facebook friends who are not to know about my Canada plans until after I am settled there. So for me, the more cryptic the title the better.

I have not used any yet since I first need to have a Canadian bank account :D. Transferwise is the most famous one. I plan to google and find other ones once I get CA accounts and such done. They are supposed to give good rates since they match individuals wishing to do transfer in both directions so some person transfering USD->CAD is matched with someone else doing CAD->USD.
