Hello,

I have been living in the US since 2007, and I am currently 19 years old. I am in my third year of undergrad at my University. I am still on H4 visa and figuring out some of the options for the future.

Will I be able to qualify for Express Entry with my degree in computer science? Given I do not have any experience because of my visa status.

I understand that the express entry is based on a point system, so if I get a job offer in Canada (hypothetically), will I be able to qualify for express entry?

If I choose to go to grad school in Canada will that improve my chances in any way?

Thanks in advanced

You won't gain points for your bachelors degree until you actually finish it-- which sounds like over a year away. Without work experience, you're not going to qualify for Express Entry. That being said, you can do a grad program in Canada on a student visa.

Minimum requirements
Skilled work experience
Your work experience must be:

  • in the same type of job as your primary NOC
  • within the last 10 years
  • paid work (volunteer work, unpaid internships don’t count)
  • at skill type 0, or skill levels A or B of the 2016 National Occupational Classification (NOC)
  • at least 1 year (1,560 hours total / 30 hours per week), continuous:
    • full-time at 1 job: 30 hours/week for 12 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)
    • equal amount in part-time: 15 hours/week for 24 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)
    • full-time at more than 1 job: 30 hours/week for 12 months at more than 1 job = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)
You must show that you did the duties set out in the occupational description in the NOC. This includes most of the main duties listed.

If you can’t show that your work experience meets the description in the NOC, you aren’t eligible under this program.

Thank you for the response mgnlky.

If I get my masters from a university in Canada on F1 visa, will I be able to qualify for express entry that way? Or do I still need work experience?

You will need work experience. Go read that link. It explains all the minimum requirements.
