Hello I am collecting my papers to apply for the family sponsorship from Italy. What should I do for medical? Do you advice to go and do that upfront or is it better to wait to be told to do so?
If that s the case, at which point can I expect that request to come?

Good evening!

You must wait until they ask for it.

It’s only valid for one year and it’s hard to say when they’ll ask for it as it varies from case to case, so doing it upfront could lead you of being obligated to redo it if it takes longer for whatever the reasons

Considering that the application should not take more than 12 months, if I take it 2 months into it that should cover the whole span right?
Can I take it upfront and risk to have to take It again or it is mandatory to wait?
If that s so, at what point should I expect to be asked for it?

You said it, should not take more than 12 months but depending on the case it could be longer.

It’s really up to you, you can take the chance and do it up front.

As I’ve told you it depends of many things when they ask for it, each cases, each agents, each VO are different

I get it, the only thing i want to make sure is that the risk about making it upfront is that I ll have to take it again.

The advise you were given was wrong, disregard that. You cannot take a medical exam upfront anymore, after December 2016 the physicians are not allowed to perform a medical exam without the request from CIC. Even if you wanted to take one upfront, you would not be able to. You will have to wait until they request it, there is no way around it or nothing to do.

You're just proving me right... you took it in December 2016. You are wrong, but you just don't know it. You read more, as you are the one giving wrong information. No one can take medical exams upfront anymore, what you are advising the OP to do is impossible.

It says right in the application checklist and guide to wait until you get the medical request. Do not do your medical upfront. The panel physicians now should not be doing an upfront medical anyway. When my wife did hers they required the medical request from CIC in order to even make an appointment.

I talked to the panel doctor here and he confirmed doing it up front is not an option anymore. Now the question is, I know each case is different, but do you have an indicative idea about at which point in the application medical will be required?

It was requested in my case after AOR 2 when the file got transferred to the Visa office. I would say that you are probably looking at anywhere from 3-5 months give or take from the time you mail your application on average. Once you receive the medical request you will have 30 days to complete it. In my wife's case the hospitals here were all booked up and she couldn't get an appointment for over 40 days so we had to request an extension.

My issue is that In that time frame I could be employed overseas by the Army, do you reckon it s likely to get an extension (facing a delay for sure) or it will compromise my application?

If you are deployed somewhere where a Panel Physician is close and if your duties allow you to, then you can get it done. If you are nowhere near a Panel Physician or you are unable to get to one because of your duties, then you can let IRCC know and they will extend the deadline or possibly allow you to complete the medical with a regular doctor.
