Hello. I’m currently in a situation and need some guidance. I have been accepted to Sheridan College for January 2018. I have paid my fees and Locked my position in the course. The only thing left is getting my study permit. My brother has agreed to support me during my studies and will be giving me $900 Cad each month to spend on myself for living expenses. I keep reading that he has to write an affadavit letter of support. Which is doable. I will be getting my permit at the border of buffalo and niagra falls and I’m nervous that I will run into issues. I don’t know how to go about things.

Also I forgot to mention that I’m living with my girlfriend and her family rent free and they will support me. I have about 1,500 US dollar and my girlfriend has about 3,000 CAD in her bank account, on top of that I’m getting some money from my school because of the currency difference which can be kept by me for living expenses. I have all my documents to prove this. I just worry because everything seems to be so scattered right now. And I don’t want to run into issues.

You need to be able to show a bank statement (either yours or your sponsors) that contains a balance equal to at least your first year tuition + $10K in living expenses. Without having a bank statement with sufficient funds, the study permit should technically be refused. So you'll be taking your chances at the border if you go without being able to demonstrate that you have enough money now.

How much does your brother have in his account? Does he have a bank balance of at least $25K? If so, can he provide you with a copy of his bank statement and letter confirming he'll be supporting your studies?

EDIT: If you've paid all of your first year tuition fees, then all you need is a bank statement with at least $10K in it.

My brother makes $100,000 US dollars a year right now so I’m positive I could get a statement showing enough funds from him. And my tuition has already been paid so I should be ok in that sense. It’s just really hectic right now because my mom and dad aren’t wealthy people so it’s tough to come up with so much money that’s why I was asking if my brothers statement would suffice.

Yes - if you can get a copy of his bank statement and an affidavit confirming he'll be supporting your studies - then you'll be good.
