On the cic website, under instruction guide, point # 9, it says:

9. Police certificate(s) (as required)
You are required to provide a police certificate for each country, other than Canada, where you were present for a total of 183 days or more during the four (4) years immediately before the date of your application.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/CIT0002ETOC.asp

So I am guessing a Canadian ceritificate is not required.

Please follow these rules to determine if you are eligible to apply:
- Take the day you want to apply and go five years back
- Count all days in those five years that you were in Canada before Permanent Residency. Call that A. If A is more than 730, then set A=730.
- Count all days in those five years that you were in Canada as a Permanent Resident. Call that B.
- Calculate X = A/2+B
- If X is more than 1095, you are eligible.
Please understand that I can't be the "personal calculator" for every forum member :) I'm sure you can do the math!

Regarding police certificates: I can still not answer that question because, again it is NOT relevant how long you were out of Canada. It is relevant WHERE you went and for how long. You are not providing that information.

Canadian police clearance cert. is not required. I'm sure they automatically run background checks.

No you don't need to check it, but if you want you can. You definitely do not need to submit it.
I actually did the U.S. I94 records thing this afternoon, and I was pleasantly surprised how convenient, fast, and 'painless' it was to do online, resulting in an understandable listing of arrivals/departures that I was easily able to save from that website as a pdf. Am uncertain tonight whether to do the Canadian CBSA history of entries/departures or not, as it says plainly on the CBSA website that citizenship applicants don't need to request it, and that it can take some 30 days to get done if one does lodge such a request.

I found this in CIC website:

Sign and date the application form with the signature you currently use on other official documents.

Note: Your application will be returned to you if:

  • the form is not signed and dated,
  • stale-dated (dated more than 90 days before IRCC receives it),
  • post-dated (dated into the future).
Note: You must be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship the day before you sign the application form.
Does it mean that we can only send the applications on October 12th?
When I applied for permeant residency I sent the application one day before the deadline. Is this gonna be different that applying for PR?

Hi Spyfy,

I am much appreciated for your effort in keeping us informed and keeping the information organized.
I have a question regarding applying outside of Canada:

I am a PR, and have accumulated enough days for my application if counted back 5 years on Oct 12th. But I left Canada this August and came to U.S. for school, can I still apply? I have not found any documents showing ineligible application while staying outside of Canada.

Would you please advise on my application eligibility? Thanks a lot!

Is it required to submit police certificate from Canada if I have not left Canada for more than 30 days at a time?
It doesn't matter if you left Canada for longer or shorter times. The only thing that matters is if you spent a total of 183 days or more in another country. Even if you never stayed more than 20 days in that country at once, if the sum is more than 183, you need the police certificate.

Hi Spyfy,
China police office requires certification application in person. I won't go back recently. I may go back China and get police certification early next year. So can I apply for citizenship with an explanation letter, and provide with my police certificate on interview?
I would advise against this. Missing police certificate can make your application non-routine. Don't give them a reason to put you on the slow pile.

Thanks for the help.

Needed to prepare a form. Should I assume that current form will have all the questions asked in the newer form so I make sure I've no surprises :)
No one knows how much the form will change apart from the fact that it will change.

Give the actual reason why you didn't apply for a new passport. E.g. you didn't have to travel.

You can apply while living outside Canada. Note that everything (test, interview, oath) must be done in Canada and it will be done close to the Canadian address that you provide. Be ready to be intensely scrutinized due to your residence abroad. Most importantly: Don't lie and pretend that you are living in Canada, be honest on your form.

Hi, I was in South America for a week. Do I need to translate the page in passport which is related to entry and exit date? It's not in English.
You don't even need to submit the pages with the stamps. You only submit the bio page of your passport. Later at the interview they might ask to see your passport. To be safe, it might be worth having it translated, but only if you think that someone who can read English and French couldn't understand the south american stamp, which I think they could anyways. They mostly have issues with stamps in non-latin characters (e.g. Arabic or Chinese).

There is a separate thread for this question, please ask there.

I need some help to what to write in the work/education history in the application

I quit my job a year and half ago, since then i was part time student on and off also i was doing some business of catering (self/employed) which i did report to the taxes last year but of course it doesn't have a steady income now what should i write in the work/education history

1- part time student
or 2- self-employed
or 3- unemployed as long as there is no steady income and there is no an official company

i'm really confused
and before any one jump into conclusion i'm not receiving any EI or any social aid i'm 100% supporting myself financially
