Are there any restrictions for who can be a co-signer? My friend is sponsoring her nephew, am I allowed to co-sign or are the only people allowed to co-sign a spouse or common law partner? The information on the CIC website is not clear.

No - you are not allowed to co-sign. Only spouses / common law partners can co-sign.

Hope your friend understand she can only sponsor her nephew if
a) she is not married, has no kids, no family in Canada, and parents are deceased. Or
b) nephew is a minor and orphaned
