Hi,

I am a new member in this forum and have read some of the interesting threads on this forum to get an insight about Canadian student visa and to find a solution to my query but was not able to find a proper answer. I will be glad if the experienced members can guide me or direct me to the right thread.

We are a family of three - me, my wife and my 4 year old son. We would like to move to Canada. We would like to go on a student visa in which my wife can study and I can work.
My wife has a study gap of 19 years from her last full time education. I saw that there is a person in this forum who got student visa after 17 years of gap. So we are keeping our hope. We will look for a degree in Child Psychology of Special Education as it is relevant to us. I will be glad if someone can answer my following questions:

1. She did her 2 months certificate course in French in 2016. Will that qualify as the last full time education?
2. Once she gets a student visa, can I go on a dependent visa with her and work full time in Canada?
3. Our son has Down's Syndrome because of which we may have issue in getting the PR. Can my wife get a student visa in-spite of this medical condition of my son and we two (me & my son) can go as dependents on her?

Son's treatment is going on from US and he is doing quite well. We won't have much dependency on the medical system for his treatment per say for Down Syndrome.

Thanks for the guidance.

Cheers !

You'll need to make a strong case regarding why your wife wants to return to school. If the highest level of education she has finished to date is a bachelor degree - she should be looking to take a masters in Canada. You'll also need to demonstrate strong ties to your home country to be approved and show you have no plans on remaining long term. This will be more difficult to do for you since you are all planning on coming as a family.

You'll also need to demonstrate that you have the financial resources to both support your wife's studies - as well as living expenses for your family. How much of an available bank balance can you show?

It will help if you have traveled quite a bit. Does your wife have previous travel to countries requiring visas (e.g UK, Europe, US)? If so - that's good. If not, you'll need to explain why she all of a sudden wants to travel all the way to Canada to complete additional studies.

Make sure her IELTS results are strong. She will want to score at least 6.5 in each of the four categories.

It's possible your son's conditions could create issues in getting a visa for him approved. It's difficult to say one way or the other until you actually go through the process. If you are successful in coming to Canada and end up applying for PR, it's quite possible your son's condition will prevent your family from being approved for permanent residency. Generally speaking, it's extremely difficult to be approved for PR with a DS child. But it looks like you're already aware of that and are only interested in coming here temporarily.

Hi Scylla,

Thanks for your detailed answer and clarifying most of the doubts.

How much bank balance is required to be shown?

In this year we have recently traveled to US and UK. This is the first time she has traveled abroad although I have traveled abroad many times. I agree with you that we will have to make a strong case to prove why she all of a sudden wants to study. Do you think that the fact that we are aware that we many not be eligible for PR at a later stage will put up a case that we have no plans of remaining there for long term?

We will also try to take up studies in such a field which can be linked with the condition of my son, for ex.: Special Education etc. What do you think?

Best Regards,
