Spousal sponsorship (Japanese citizen)

Hi everyone,

I'm a Canadian citizen, and my wife is Japanese. We recently sent in our application for our spousal sponsorship and had it returned stating two things:

1) We didn't provide a birth certificate for my spouse.
2) We didn't provide our marriage certificate.

So, to answer both:

1) We provided the Kaisei Gen Koseki which should is a legal document in Japan for birth.
2) We provided the Kon-in Todoke Juri Shomeisho also known as the Certificate of Acceptance of Notification of Marriage which is our legal document in Japan to prove we are married.

So...what am I not understanding? Were these the wrong documents? Please note that all Japanese documents were translated as requested.

Are you sure it stated that you didn't provide them (have they sent you a letter of explanation?), or you just suggested it from highlights in the checklist? Cause sometimes their hints on what went wrong could be challenging to understand.

As another reason I can suggest is they probably need to have certified copies of these documents.
That's what happened with my application, despite the fact that translation agency did sworn that copy and translation taken from original.

Anyway, if you want to be sure, call them, ask your question and take a note of name of operator and time of your call. You can use it when you submit your doc-s second time, by saying that you have followed instructions given by their operator.

The letter they sent is one of those generic "application must meet requirements of section blah blah"...but they highlighted a few things...one being the "certified copy of the original document"...which I'm technically providing the original document in general with certified translations.

Second, they highlighted both the "birth certificate" and "marriage certificate" sections on the document checklist.

Should I not be sending the originals and just photocopying it? I really don't see the point in that since the originals are just printed documents from city hall in Tokyo, so I don't even need these. I can just get them printed over and over again if need be.

Printed out? Isn't it a legal document made on certificate paper?

I am not common with the traditions and the ways of Japan to document significant legal events though assuming it's only way to obtain BC and MC then you might need to provide an explanation why it looks like that. They extra suspicious to the documents they can't read and don't understand.

But calling them wouldn't hurt for sure.

PS: Starting to think that both our applications were processed by the same person. (￢_￢)

LOL sounds like it! But yeah, they're printed on like certificate or fancy paper...but I think maybe I understand where I went wrong...they want "certified copies"...and I guess these might be considered the originals. I'm gonna try that and get them copied and certified. Wish me luck!

PS Calling them is like hunting an animal. It has to be done in precise time and with a lot of patience.

No1. You need Koseki tohon as well.
No2. It has been asked and answered in the Japanese forum. Sorry I didn't have time to search it. It's in Japanese only.
