Hi All,
I need advice from those who have experience in filling "Date first became qualified to practice in this occupation" in work history option in the Express Entry profile and I am in a dilemma as follows:

1) Education stream: Biotechnology
Applying under Primary Occupation for FSW: NOC 5121
Work Exp.:
Sept 2011 to July 2012 - NOC 2171
Aug 2012 to Apr 2014 - NOC 5121

So, what should I fill in "Date first became qualified to practice in this occupation"? (I am applying in NOC 5121)

Sept 2011 or Aug 2012?

If Sept 2011, it is NOC 2171 and my primary occupation under which I am applying (NOC 5121) contradicts this.
If Aug 2012, it is NOC 5121 but would NOC 2171 work exp. be counted in FSW points and CRS points then?

2) Also, acc. to instruction for filling "Date first became qualified to practice in this occupation", some are suggesting to fill graduation date while others suggest filling date when you got job?

If I enter as per graduation date, my education stream (Biotechnology) contradicts to education requirement acc. to NOC 5121. Is it likely to be the problem in the case?

If I enter date when I got my first job, my dilemma is as point (1) above.

Hi define,

First of all, all my answers are just personal opinions after many hours of reading from CIC website and some forums.

1. By education requirement I assume you mean the employment requirement in the NOC description. NOC is used widely in Canada for many departments and CIC is just one of them, so the employment requirement only applies when you try to find a job in Canada, therefore it DOES NOT apply to immigration applicants for your applications

One of the references is here: canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t381340.0.html

2. For the "Date first became qualified to practice in this occupation" question, I actually have the same issue too. From most threads I read, it does NOT matter for most of nocs, and you could just fill in the date when you either finished your undergraduate programme or started your first job. I dont know exactly why they put this question here, but I assume that this is for those whose nocs need some special and more strict requirements in terms of qualifications. For instance, you would probably need a highly related undergraduate degree or a license at least to become a doctor in most of the countries around the world.

Lets wait for seniors to give a more reliable answer to the second question.

You can mention the date on which you graduated (Bachelors Degree)

Thanks a lot for your inputs!

I want to know since my graduation is in field of biotechnology and that mentioned in NOC 5121 requirement as degree in English, advertising etc., and in this case, if I put graduation date as date I became qualified to practice in NOC 5121, how would it be evaluated?

Also, want to know is "date you became qualified to practice in NOC" is specifically verified and if yes, is it verified through graduation date or date of first job in primary NOC?

Well, I have been working in my current job for six years now- but I only gained the degree for it two years ago. So I just filled the dates as is in my application. I don't assume it will be much trouble in the end- especially since I have enough work experience either way, no matter whether they only want to count since my day of graduation, or whether they choose to do it from the day I first started working.
There is also the fact that a degree is technically not mandatory for my occupation, according to the NOC description I have for it- so it is feasible that I could have started working before I had a college degree as well.
The point I am trying to make is, it doesn't matter much for most NOCs, unless you are in a heavily restricted field requiring special training and/or licensing.

Hi Aragorn,

I had started working even before completion of my Master's degree for NOC code 2174. While filling in the application, I have mentioned my start date of employment as March, 2016. I had graduated in Dec, 2015. But, I had actually started working in March,2015. The Experience letter from my Employer would also state as March, 2015. Is this going to be a problem? Will they consider my experience from March, 15 to Dec, 15 as apprenticeship and then consider the later part as actual exp. Please advise.
