Hi guys, well I just want to share my experience of how to get a marriage certificate in Ontario using the Emergency service (when you have a proof of urgency). In that way you only need to wait a couple weeks (probably even less, like in my case) instead of the 10 weeks that normally takes.

Well, I got married at the end of May 2015, we asked to our officiant to send the paperwork to the Office of the Registrar General (ORG) by Express post (the office is in Thunder Bay, ON). Only five days after we applied to get or certificate online (even when the webpage told us that our marriage was a recent event and it will take 10 weeks), we paid the rates and we printed the confirmation page.

After, we write a letter explaining of reasons of urgency to request the emergency service (an example of the letter will be post below) to be send to the (ORG) with our proof of urgency. For this step you can send it by fax, however, if you are in Toronto you can go in person to the ServiceOntario centre (47 Sheppard Avenue East, unit 417) and they could send it directly and faster to the corresponding office at ORG. Both options work.

We got our certificate after 6 days of send the letter, the proof of urgency and the order number (payment receipt).

Tips:
+ Always say the truth about your status in the letter. Be kind in what you write.
+ Send also the confirmation page of the payment of the certificate (the page that have the Order Number).
+ Present a proof of urgency reliable (visa about to expire, letter of the government saying that you will be deported, medical appointment out of Canada, so on).
+ Apply to get the marriage certificate AFTER you are sure that all the paperwork (that you officiant must send) have been received at the ORG. (that's why we use express post).

I hope this can be useful.

Cheers!!!

ATTENTION: THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR GENERAL

The undersigned, XXXX XXXX XXXX (name of the person), is directed to you to request your office in the most attentive way that please process my marriage registration, with a license number: XXXXXXXX (number of the license) at your earliest convenience. My husband, (XXXXXXXXXX) and I were married on XXXXX (date) in Toronto, Ontario. We have already ordered a marriage certificate and a certified copy of registration, with and order number: XXXXXXXX. I know that this is a very recent event, for this reason it does not qualify for any of the expedited services options that are available online, however I would like to request you to please take this letter into account when you receive my paperwork from the officiant, due that we have an urgency that is described below.

We want to apply for a Visa extension, but according with the Canadian Immigration rules we need to apply these processes a month before his visa expire (date when the visa expire) and the Marriage Certificate is an essential document required by the CIC.

As a proof of urgency, I'm attaching a copy of my husband's visa stamp which expires the (date again of visa expire).

I hope you can help us with my request to allow my husband to be able to stay with me. If you have any questions regarding this request, please feel free to contact me at the contact information given at the top of this letter.

Thanks your time and your attention, sincerely

Thank you! I'm starting to draft a similar letter now, can't hurt to try.

Did you take it into the Toronto office or fax it in? I'm wondering how I could show the visa stamp as proof through fax.
I was in Toronto at the time I requested it, so I went directly to their office. However if you are not in Toronto or you don't have the time you can fax them.

For the passport stamps first you need to scan them (with the best quality as possible), print them and send them by fax together with the letter and the confirmation page of the payment of the certificate.

Sorry to bring up an old thread..

But I just want to confirm that when going through the emergency service, you order only the long form aka the copy of the marriage registration? And only when the entire package is received by the Office of the Registrar then I may apply for the marriage certificate?
