WHV and Student Visa

Hello!

I would like to ask something about the working holiday visa and the student visa, I apologize in advance if it sounds like a dumb question but I would really appreciate any advice.

A couple years ago I had a student visa and was studying in Vancouver, loved it, however I had to leave Canada due to some personal problems and go back to the UK.

I would love to be able to get a new student visa and go back, however I’ve seen that the WHV is 18-35 and since I’m 33, I was thinking that maybe I could take advantage of the WHV for 1 year (I think that’s the length of the visa) and then get a student visa.

Is it possible to go with a WHV (1 year), and once the WHV ends just apply to a school and switch to a 2 year Student Visa? (Would be 3 years total between the 2), or do they make you leave the country for a few months in order to switch for WHV to Student Visa?
i’m aware (unless they recently changed it) that in order to get PR, you have to stay in Canada for minimum 2 years (amongst other requirements of course).

I’m sorry if it’s a stupid question but it’s a bit confusing. Would it be a good idea to do WHV first for a year and then Student visa to get 2 extra years?
I was thinking of studying first and once the 2 years student visa end, get the WHV, however if I do that, I would be already 35 and won’t be able to apply.

Thank you!

You can certainly apply for a study permit after the WHV. Makes sure you familiarize yourself with the study permit new rules and new requirements.

There is no requirement to live in Canada for 2 years to get PR. This rule is for maintaining PR status once someone is already a PR.

do you know if it’s mandatory to leave the country in order to switch from WHV to the student one?

Just asking since it depends on the country, and some of them require you to leave, since you would have to pick up your visa from your embassy. It’s a bit confusing.

This is no such requirement to immigrate to Canada. Many immigrates apply from outside of Canada and some never set foot to Canada before they are approved to become PRs.

You should do a bit of research on different economic stream to immigrate. Your work experience inside Canada can count in some streams.

Your study permit application would be depending on many factors and there are some recent changes on study permit application requirement. So read that carefully as well (and if you are reading post on this forum, be aware that some information in older posts may not be applicable any more)
And there is no "switching" from one type of permit to another. It's a different application.

Good luck with your path. Enjoy your WHV experience and Canada is not exactly the same as a few years ago. Economy and things are bit different now.
Go from there and see.
