Dear Forum Members,
I applied for asylum from Kitchener, Ontario, and I recently received the second portal email. I hope to receive my eCoPR and PR soon. After obtaining my PR, I would like to retrieve my home country passport from IRCC.
Could anyone provide guidance on how to proceed with this? Any advice or information on the process would be greatly appreciated.

Dear forum members,
I am a protected person and recently received my eCOPR. I urgently need to travel to the US, but my home country passport was collected by the Kitchener IRCC office. I would like to know if I can request my passport back.
What is the process to request my passport, where should I send the request, and what steps should I follow to retrieve it?
I would greatly appreciate any information or guidance on this matter.

Thank you.

Apply for an RTD, your previous US visa probably cancelled. In addition, it’s not allowed to use home country passport for travel, you can lose your status, or have problems later if you want to apply for citizenship.

you may also need to apply for a new us visa after getting your rtd.

but also you should be allowed to request your home country passport back from the IRCC office, I dont have experience with kitchener but in toronto/etobicoke there are instructions for the process posted on the office door. it is essentially emailing the office with your request and waiting for them to respond and give you an appointment to pick up the passport.

Hi,

Did you manage to get your passport back? Would it risk losing the PR status if i renew it or travel with it?

First I understand we shouldn't travel with the home country passport, but I also understand that my home country passport is my personal belonging and we are eligible to request it back once we become PR.

The purpose of this thread is to understand how to get it back. I've searched this forum and it seems there are two options:

1. Contact CIC using their web form
https://secure.cic.gc.ca/enquiries-renseignements/canada-case-cas-eng.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

2. Contact CBSA using their client support contact form
https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/contact/csform-formulairesc-eng.html

I have tried the CIC web form but it's been 4 weeks and no response yet. I would like to try the 2nd approach but not sure which topic/question to select (these fields are required and can not be left blank). For now I plan to choose "Travel / travel programs" under Topic and "Moving to Canada" under Question. But before I go ahead and submit the CBSA form, I'd like to ask around in this forum and understand the following:

1. How everyone else gets their passport back? Are there any other options besides the abovementioned two?
2. Am I selecting the correct categories in the CBSA form?

Thanks

Yes, you may risk your PR status. Do not renew it or used it to travel. Get an RTD.

Hello Everyone,

I applied refugee in 2020 and my passport was seized in Montreal IRCC. I got my PR under spousal sponsorship and have withdrawn my refugee case. My lawyer faxed my passport return letter to CBSA with all the supporting docs( Passport copy, PR card, Notice of seizure). I recieved reply from CBSA to send IRCC an email as i got my PR from immigration. I have called IRCC and they said my passport is with Montreal and office will contact me... waiting from sep no response yet. I have called IRCC so many times they just say this same thing. Does anyone know what else i can do as i live in ottawa and they say ottawa ircc will handle it further. I need my passport urgently if anyone went through same situation please HELP ME.....! CAN I PICK IT UP FROM MONTREAL IRCC BY ANY CHANCE? IF YES WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

I was able to get my passport back after following these instructions I received from IRCC:

if you wish to have your foreign national passport or travel document returned, the responsible office will keep it until it expires or if you become a Canadian citizen.

If you require your foreign national passport or travel document prior to its expiry, you must return the Canadian travel document in exchange.

We invite you to mail back the Certificate of Identity or Refugee travel document that was issued to you along with a letter of explanation to the following address:

OSC PPT-COI
PO BOX 8783 STN T CSC
Ottawa ON K1G 5G8

In your letter of explanation, please include a confirmation of the mailing address where you would like to receive your passport.

If you require your passport urgently, please also:

  • Write URGENT on the envelope, and
  • Include the envelope tracking number.
