Just want to come on up, settle in, and then figure out the paperwork. Is this a thing people do?

Hello All and Anyone who knows<
This is a sudden adventure on our part. How long does someone have to be in the country before we would be breaking rules by not filling out paperwork.
Or maybe signing up for one of the different options.
I am just trying to get my head around it all.
Thoughts anyone?
Thank you so much.

How can you tell someone has done zero research , without them saying they’ve done zero research

Do at least some of the wet work and then come back with questions

“This is a sudden adventure on our part”

Christ have mercy
Thought for a second I was on Reddit

You make it sound like moving up here is as easy as heading to the Olive Garden or Red Lobster for dinner

And don't want to do any research either, or would rather to be spoon fed baby food. Not to mention don't want to hire a lawyer or immigration consultant to do the work.

I knew I was somehow going to come off like a jerk. I have been looking and researching but became so overwhelmed. I thought maybe I was looking up the wrong things or going in the wrong direction. I have never been to Canada, I know I made it sound superficial but I wanted to stay away from the real reasons. I am scared for my family. I think terrified is a better word but I didn’t want to upset anyone. I do not have a clue how to use Reddit. I never really have been on a forum before.
So, this is Canada, great start. I filled out the free assessment.

So you want to immigrate to Canada?
you have made your first post as if you can just moved over to another country without doing much research.
You don't have to give us the real reason behind WHY you want to move. But assuming that you are from USA, you can visit Canada and stay for up to 6 months with no much issue.
But you cannot move and live in another country just like that. Canada and US are 2 different countries.

If you have special skill/education...etc., you can look into getting employed and get a work permit. Look into LMIA or LMIA-exempted jobs. Those would be closed work permit.
Some companies do international transfer, so that's another possibility for closed work permit. Your employer's immigration lawyer will need to help on this process.

Or if you have specific education you want to advance in Canada, you can look into being an international student. Tuition is much more expensive compare to local students. (3x or more) And you need to show that you have the financial ability to live in Canada (savings) and to pay the expensive tuition. You also need to show how the education will help you to advance your career.

Similar, Canadian who wants to move to US will need to go through similar process. Starting likely with work permit.

So short answer for your posted question, No, you cannot just move and then "figure out" later.

Immigration is complicated and a big life decision.

Hire a Canadian immigration lawyer. Based on what you've written, that's your only path forward for determining if you may qualify to immigrate.

How old are you? Given you’ve never been on a forum before I would assume you are likely over 50 which would raise even more issues when it comes to moving to Canada. Do you have children? Are you all US citizens?

They referred to themselves as “ Mainers “, definition of someone from the State of Maine . Assumed American

It would be akin to me loving Bar Harbor when I visited there , doesn’t mean I can legally just go and “ settle “ in there and let the immigration chips fall where they may.
My American lineage diverged in the late 1700’s

Did pick up on reference to Maine. The fact that they said they fear for their family potentially references the fact that they may not all be citizens which is why I asked.

Why not visit Canada? I saw many Maine-plated cars when I was in Nova Scotia.
