Hi, I am going to take Canadian citizenship soon. My plan is - I am currently in USA on H1B with Indian passport. When my oath ceremony date comes, I will go to Canada and take oath and travel back to USA with Indian passport on H1B next day (As I will not get 1 week leave from my job). Later I will apply the Canadian Passport in USA, surrender Indian passport in USA and continue to work in USA on H1B status. Later I will use Canadian passport exist and reentry. Has anybody tried this option? or any risk expected?

In this case, after getting Canadian passport do we need to go to border and get H1b stamping on Canadian passport?

Did either of you report to CIC that you’ll be leaving Canada post submitting our application? It states on their website to notify if leaving for more than 2 weeks.

Hi @ArunV @doiena @senhari2005 I am in a similar situation. Question - Did the immigration officer ask you why you were in Canada for such a short time? and were there any problems in re-entering the US on Indian passport the next day of taking oath?
Assuming you secured the Canadian passport from US how did you go about getting H1B stamped on it?

Hi,

I am also in US with Indian passport in H1B. I got an Canada oath ceremony for this month. Should i travel to Canada complete oath ceremony and return back and can apply for new Canadian passport from united states?.

Is it legal to travel with Indian passport after oath ceremony? Any way had performed this?

or is it advisable to travel with Canadian passport and Indian passport having H1b visa stamping

Here is what I ended up doing. Travelled to Canada and took the oath. It was virtual so I got the citizenship certificate within 2 hrs of oath ceremony.
Next day (Wednesday)I applied for passport under express pickup option. Received passport on Friday.
Crossed the border via road. Rainbow bridge. I was asked how long I was in Canada for and why I am going to US. I told them my work visa status and said I have a new citizenship and I want my I797 to be linked to new passport . I was sent to immigration office upstairs.
The officer said I could have traveled back with my Indian passport and getting I797 attached to Canadian passport was not needed to gain entry to US. Again, this is at discretion of the officer and I didn't wanted to take any risk so I traveled back on Canadian passport.
There isn't a clear guidance that I could find if we can still travel on Indian passport after acquiring new citizenship. US law says to gain entry to US, passport must be valid for 6 months and on some Indian websites it said Indian passport is valid up to 3 months after acquiring new citizenship. Due to this lack of clarity I decided to just extend my stay in Canada.

I did not give an address proof. As far as I recall I took my citizenship certificate, one piece of id, passport photos. I submitted my application in person. You have to make sure you go to the center that processes express or urgent passport requests. I went to Scarborough center in Ontario.
