Past membership in Communist Party of China?

Regarding question 9 on IMM5669 "Membership of association with organizations".

In the past, my wife was a member of the Communist Party of China. Like a lot of students in China, she joined to help advance her career after graduation from university. Since moving to Canada, she has not had any involvement with the party or paid party dues. Moreover, she doesn't have any interest in being a party member now that she intends to live in Canada permanently.

Would past membership in the party have cause any issue for our sponsorship application?

You just honestly put this information in the form with an explanation that she is no more involved in the politics. The past membership will not go against her.

The only issue could be a longer processing time for the security/background checks.

Yea you are required to if not you could get a ban for misrepresentation. Also rules have tightened when it comes to China so outcome a decade ago may not represent current processing.
